from a quick glance at newegg i found these two,

this first one, i can tell you for a fact this thing will pound some bass and sound half way decent while doing it, a good friends room mate had these my freshman year, not to mention they look sick with the blue LEDs

this second one i have wanted for a while but other things (like my darn car) have been taking priority, they look sick and with a parallel dual sub this thing has to pound the roof off

Tell him to go to a pawn shop and pick up some big old Cerwin Vega's (with the 15" drivers) and a cheap amp.
That was every system I ever encountered in college.
And the "like it booming" and caring not about distortion crowd just loves it.

Personally, I OWN these
[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-2300-THX-Certified-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002SQ2P2"]Amazon.com: Logitech Z-2300 THX-Certified 2.1 Speaker System with Subwoofer: Electronics[/ame]

And they are GREAT! They really have great sound and great, adjustable bass.

While Bose is very great their price/performance has always seamed to be lacking based on what I've seen in threads here on OCN.

I've actually heard the first one at parties and I agree they have a booming bass but the quality definitely is not to great aside from that. The second ones on the other hand look great. I looked up two different reviews and they came out pretty good and for only $60 that seams like a great deal.

Yea I looked into PA systems on Craigslist and they were going for around $400 for everything. Not to mention I'm 100% sure those would lead straight to noise violations, haha. I would like something that would also work with movies and hooked up to a television and gaming.

I'm honestly not sure about the Z-2300. Right now I've read mixed reviews ranging from too much bass with a poor mids so I'll think I'll stay away from those.

I think the companies like Bose and Logitech lack sound quality. Energy, NHT, and Aperion have some great speakers. M-Audio is great. I would get the ProMedias if you weren't partying (OM Fudging God! I still have that "Friday" song stuck in my head). I would get energy's but they can get expensive but it depends on what you choose. I don't know if the tiny SuperZero 2.0s can drive a party but they're good for unpowered speakers in terms of price ($100). Look at my thread about the receiver. Gorb listed some great speakers and subs for budget.

Yea your budget is about twice as high as mine :/ Not to mention I don't really know what I'm looking for.
