Low wattage fanless PSU

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

I'm after a fanless or silent low wattage psu for my server,
It'll be running a core 2 duo with 2GB of ram with a few HDDs, it'll also be underclocked to reduce power consumption.
If I can't find one I'm considering removing the fan out of a 450w thermaltake unit that I have.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Well I don't know what Thermaltake 450W unit you have but most of their units in that wattage range are low quality, you don't want to remove the fan on one of those. And even if you have a quality unit, if you remove the fans you'll be running it hotter than you're supposed to and maybe decreasing its lifespan.
Off the top of my head there is only one unit on the market that's fanless, and it's the SeaSonic X 400. Pretty expensive though.

Seasonic X-400 for sure. 80+ Gold, fully modular, fanless

It came with a thermaltake case I bought. I bought a seperate psu because the thermaltake psu wasn't suitable.

That seasonic is a tad expensive, it's $180 here in aus.
I think I might get a unit that has a temperature control instead, fanless units seem to be hard to find.
I'll aim for at least a bronze rating, anything higher will be a bonus

There are other fanless PSUs on the market, but they tend to be worse and not even less expensive than the Seasonic X Series fanless models.

80+ bronze and quiet...sounds like Seasonic S12II. 430W model is $85 (a bit high to be honest) on PCCaseGear:

Should be similar to the S12II 380W (edit: oh wait this review is for the older non-bronze version)

that 430w seasonic looks like what I need, I'll have to read some reviews on it and try and find it cheaper.
Thanks for the assist.

Edit:
I found a couple of antec's and corsiar with similar ratings
Corsair CX-430
https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php...ducts_id=16471
Antec Neo Eco 450C 450W
https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php...ducts_id=13454
Antec EarthWatts 430W
https://www.pccasegear.com/index.php...ducts_id=15348

I have a 900w antec at the momement for my main pc, which seems to be pretty quiet.
I've never used a corsair psu before.

I'm leaning towards either the seasonic or the antec eathwatt

CX430 uses a cheaper fan and is supposedly not as quiet. Also, it's not even 80 plus (barely). Neo Eco uses a similar fan as the S12II and is manufactured by Seasonic based on the previous design iteration of the S12II. That's maybe as quiet as the S12II, but it's not 80 plus bronze. This is probably the best alternative. The Earthwatts Green uses that 80mm side fan, which isn't as quiet.

hmm.. I'll have to to do some research on them, think I might go seasonic purely for noise.
Thanks again

Do you already have the parts? Why I ask is because there's a limit to how little power a Core 2 Duo can run. I ran an E5200 (45nm Wolfdale) at 1200MHz and 0.8v, and the system still took over 70W with two HDDs. Clarkdales and Sandy Bridge can cut that almost in half.

They updated the CX430 to a more efficient V2 which is Certified 80Plus Standard, although it borders on being 80Plus Bronze. I don't know if it's any quieter or not, but it appears to have the same fan as the original.
