GTX 580 vs. 6970

Thread Starter
Hi guys,
I'm sure this has been asked before.
However, I want to tailor the question to my needs.
I'm looking into a new rig, and I'm torn between the MSI GTX 580 Lightning vs. the MSI 6970.

I don't know which is better overall. Not just benchmarks and FPS. I mean, driver support, multi-monitor support, temps, noise, OC ability on the stock cooler, the works.
They won't be in SLI/CFire.

Thanks

A single 580 can NOT run Nvidia surround. Hate to say it, but if you are looking for surround/ eyefinity without multicards, nvidia is disqualified. ( you did say no SLI right? )

The 580 is a better card.

The lighting is really silent and drivers, in my opinion, are better at the green side.

Well the 580 is hands down the most powerful, and better driver support IMO. However the 6970 wins in price performance and you only need one if going three plus screens for gaming, the Nvidia cards need at least two cards to do surround. The 580 is also better for distributed computing such as folding@home if yur into that.

You could by the 6970 and use the saved money to put towards better CPU and what not. It is a beast of a card I went with the 6950 that unlocks to a 6970 if I ever need that power.

GTX 580 it is.
I'll only be using 2 monitors, so I don't need SLI.
Dimaggio, the rig will have a 2600k, so I'm good with that.

Driver Support: For single card setups, both nVidia and AMD are neck and neck. Once you hit multi card systems nVidia is much less finicky and just seem to work more often
Multi-monitor: 6970
Temps: Last I checked, the 580 keeps them in check better
Noise: 580 hands down.
OC ability: I'd take the 580 too... but I have zero clue, that's my inner fanboi kicking in tbh.
The works: Which card is better bang for buck, the 6970, but which card would I rather buy in the end factoring everything in, the 580.

AMD has had a rough patch with me... the 10X driver set were just the biggest hassle for my systems.. nVidia has never given me an issue.

Also, If you want to fold, the nVidia 580 will do much better ^^

Nice choice, you wont regret it. I love my 580. Best single GPU anywhere. No need for sli really, all games play on max settings for me. (with exclusion of FFXIV, max - ambient occlusion and depth of field)

580 is by far the better card. I stuck with ATI for my choice since I use three monitors (only game on one), but if nVidia ever offers 3 monitor support from one card, I'll be switching
