This just in, intense metal exertion increases calorie intake.

Seriously, when are they going to look at the roots and stop blaming video games.

That's actually not true. Mental exertion doesn't make you hungry, though it can cause emotional eating. Emotional eating is more or less a disorder or an addiction, completely different from regular means of hunger. You believe you are hungry, similar to an ex-addict (best example is nicotine) who gets false cravings that cause hunger.

Huh? I ate a whole lot less when I played. I didn't want to stop long enough to eat a good amount.

I don't know if it's psych or not but becoming fat is contagious. It might have been sociology, most definitely could have been. Either way studies show that a lot of people tend to eat more when others around them eat a lot.

Basically eating around somebody who eats a lot will cause you to eat a lot. Now, this doesn't do anything in and of it self though if you have a significant other who is larger... You can take it a step further and say that fat parents [generally] raise fat children, or at least they cause their children to eat more just by eating a lot themselves.

Oh the joys of studying "pseudo science". I actually had over weight family, though I myself have been very active. I get stress problems if I don't maintain a certain level of physical activity, it's really nice cause I don't gain weight because of it.

I'm just pointing out conformity, expectations, and generalizations also play a part in determining if certain data is correlated because of certain causes. I didn't read the article but you cant just say that if you play video games you are more likely than others to be fat. People are the masters of their own destiny, I think that many of those who play video games have similar mentalities, and these mentalities (be it habit or preference) lead to someone being obese and not just playing video games. Video games is simply a side effect in my opinion.

Thanks for the conversation.

Well I'll be, it's not the calories but the glucose levels that cause you to be hungry.

http://www.scientificamerican.com/ar...kes-you-hungry

I bet there is a diet that would curb that hunger and not cause you to eat more.

[edit] I knew it wasn't calories, burning calories is never what makes you hungry. There is always some other chemical process related to something that makes you hungry.

Kind of like taste, as soon as you taste something "flavorful" that causes you to salivate your body sends signals to your stomach to get ready to get food. That in turn causes excess acid to form in your stomach, one reason why chewing gum is terrible. It's not making you hungry but that's how your body knows to get ready to receive food. =)
