HP desktop memory?

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I decided to take a peek into my family's desktop, a HP Pavilion P6310F.

What I saw that caught my eye was 3 of the 4 RAM slots filled. It has 6 (3x2GB) GB of ram. Would the dual channel/single channel orientation impact performance? Would it be faster or better performing if I took out one stick and had 4GB of dual channel?

FWIW this is the pc I'm talking about

Newegg has a pic of what I'm talking about here

There wouldn't really be any noticeable gains in speed.

if it has 2 blue and 2 black ram slots (tough to tell in the pic)
it should support dual channel ram, and it would be slightly faster for ram intensive tasks

if you dont use more than 3g of ram it would improve by some
onboard gpu steals 256+m of ram

try taking out a dimm (use 2 blue or 2 black slots)
then run cpuz
check the memory tab to see what mode its in

Not really a difference that is noticable.Try running maxxmem too test it out if you'd like.

I doubt you're doing anything that would benefit from increased memory bandwidth.
Once again...

The ram in that PC is running in single channel mode, because of the 3 memory sticks.
AMD motherboards usually need 2 sticks in the same colored slot to run in dual channel mode.

The 6GB probably doesn't provide a huge benefit over 4GB for their needs and I have doubts as to all of it being used... however as long as under 4GB are being used the memory will run dual channel, as per interleaved memory spec; only once the third DIMM is used will it revert to single channel and one will start seeing a performance impact. For warranty purposes (if any still exists), keep it in there.
