which components to buy now?

Thread Starter
so I originally wanted to do an 800$ budget build...but decided to save a bit more and wait up until around xmas time with a budget of around 1200$, and when the SBs are older tech.

I'm really set on the recommendations given and gonna plan the build around the i5 2500k. (I was told the 2600k wouldn't really make much of a difference for a gamer)

I'm looking for killer deals on a daily basis, and will pull the trigger if the right ones comes along, but my question is which components can I buy today and wont regret buying in a few months?

im thinking HDD/Coolers/PSU/Case/????

Thanks guys!

Ur thinking right. HDD/Coolers/PSU/cases are less prone to price drops compared to cpus/gpus. However cases do drop in price after they been out for a while. HDDs also drop in price as HDD with larger capacity/speed comes out. CPU coolers almost never drop in price, sometimes they even increase in price, such as how the CM 212+ is more expensive on newegg than when it first release. You can also get RAM since price for RAM won't be much cheaper in the future. In my opinion gpus fall in value the fastest, even more so than cpus.

yeah, I remember getting this 7950gt a loooong time ago when it was was pretty decent...year later it was laughed ~_~

I'm totally clueless about cases though..pretty much aesthetics determines the price? ventilation of a 50$ case can be as good as a 200$ case in some cases right? (no pun intended)

thanks for the heads up on the ram...i'll go ahead and shop for some. I heard the ripjaws are nice.

as for HDDs...you think they're going to drop even more?? they seem pretty cheap now...currently looking for a steal on an F3 Spinpoint...but i'm worried that SSD prices will drop soon.

any recommendations on some really good cpu coolers/ram/PSU that I should keep an eye out for?

Cases: Airflow depends on the individual cases so a $60 case can have more airflow than a $200 case but not likely. It depends on how many fans you can mount and how efficiently they are placed. The CM 912 is very good at 50usd after rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-233-_-Product The CM 690-II advance and Lancool K62 are both very similar and are the best cases at the $100 range:
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...112239&Tpk=k62

If you want the best case, for $140 the NZXT Phantom is my favorite case at the moment; it has tons of airflow and as lots of room and also a built in fan controller:

HDD: Just get 1 or 2 of the Samsung F3 1gb for now. Since Samsung sold their HDD division to Seagate Spinpoints will be low on stock soon and prices will rise. They are the best drives on the market period. Even if you plan to get a SSD later you can still use the Spinpoints for storage as SSD is only viable as a boot drive, even if SSD prices drop.

CPU Cooler: CM 212+, it is the price/performance king http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?...eve-CPU-Cooler or Scythe Mugen 2 if you want even lower temps for a bit more, but be warn this heatsink is HUGE! http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?...pes-CPU-Cooler
