Does this sound like an Overclock problem or a bad GPU?

I overclocked my 6870 by 50mHz core and memory clock, and while playing BC2 my monitor suddenly showed no DVI connection (I am connected via DVI) and my PC restarted. Upon restart, my fans on my card went to 100% and then dropped back down to 50% a minutes later. I have them set auto to 50%.

Does this sound like an instability problem or is there a problem with the GPU? The temperature was below 60 degrees while playing BC2.

For some reason, it actually sounds like a driver issue.
What are your temps looking like as well?

Hi ComradeNF. Did this issue begin the moment you overclocked the card? As mbudden said it does show signs of a driver issue, make sure you have updated to the latest. Also, a quick way to tell if it is the overclock is to return to previous clocks to see if resolves itself.

The fans ramping up seems normal. That happens with quite a few current cards right before posting.

I returned to regular clock speed and the problem still persists. I am thinking about switching to NVIDIA because for some reason I always have problems with AMD cards.

I tried older drivers and I still have the same problem.

The card sounds like its working normally. Almost all GPUs ramp to up 100% fan until windows loads up.

to be honestly this sounds like a driver crashing (possibly due to heat), or a power supply.

I see you have a 700W PSU, which is crazy overkill if it puts out anything close to that for a 6870 and a 965BE, but do you happen to have a spare laying around to test with ?

How high to temps get during BC2 ?

Nope, no spare PSU. However, temps rarely go above 55 degrees.

I never remembered GPU fans kicking up to 100% when windows load. CPU cooler fan may do that. Drivers could be crashing, but I won't be so quick to blame it on drivers. Are you controlling fan profile via MSI AB? What is the fan speed in CCC?
