Build Log: Mini ITX Performance

Thread Starter
Hey everyone. Hoping to make my first post as interesting as possible with this new build that I'll be documenting. Hopefully we'll see some mods along the way to make everything work.

This build features a Mini ITX board in a little Lian Li case. Here's the parts list:

Lian Li PC-Q08B ($119.99)

lian-li-pc-q08b-mini-tower-chassis.jpg

Gigabyte GA-H67N-USB3-B3 Mini ITX Motherboard ($114.99)

13-128-484-TS?$S300W$

Intel Core i5-2400 Sandy Bridge 3.1GHz ($189.99)

EVGA SuperClocked GeForce GTX 560 Ti (249.99)

Corsair XMS3 8GB DDR3 1333 RAM ($89.99)

Corsair HX Series CMPSU-650HX 650W PSU ($119.99)

These parts are all on their way from Newegg, and I also have a Corsair H50 CPU cooler from my previous system that I'll be using in this build, it should be interesting to see how the airflow behaves with such a tight build, anyone have experience with something like this?

A few words on my previous desktop:
(OverClocked i7 930, SuperClocked EVGA 480) obviously very different from this upcoming build (huge, tons of extra space, power hungry, etc). All of those things are great and can be really fun to work with but with this next build I'm concentrating a lot of power into a small, precise build. Should be fun!

I have some pictures of my old system for comparison.

Parts should come in later this week. I'll be sure to log as much as possible!

What bookshelf speakers are those and how do they sound? I've been wanting some but they need to be small due to space.

Well look at my sigrig.
The 07 is a smaller less sophisticated version of the 08.
its very tight inside and onl just fits the GPU with mm's to spare.
I had my case modded by a mate for a front 120mm fan and side mounted 240mm rad.
had a whole cut in the bottom to get some airflow to gpu.

It seems like a really accessible build, I think the "just enough" mindset is starting to catch on. Maybe you can learn from my mistakes, it would be cool to see someone improve on this build.

I actually built these cabinets for the Logitech z5500 speakers. The enclosures are made of oak and have banana plugs in the back. They sound awesome (they sounded great before too), these enclosures got rid of the built in port so I think highs sound a bit better now though I'm biased. Here's the whole set minus the sub.

I actually looked at the 07 but it seemed like the 08 was more appropriate for the h50 and the 10" card. Props on fitting a rad in there, that's incredible. Does your motherboard officially support 1600mhz RAM? All of the mini ITX boards that I found only support 1333.

Also, here's my quick idea on airflow and my reasoning for getting the reference card over the Twin Frozr 2.

Airflow.png

Essentially I'm planning on using the front 140 for intake and the top 120 for exhaust. Mounted below the 120 will be the rad for the h50. I'm hoping that fresh air will still be pretty close to room temperature when is reaches the rad.

The big green block is the 560. Though the Twin Frozr 2 has lower GPU temps, the design of the shroud allows hot air to escape into the case. With the reference design the air will (ideally) come in from the grill on the bottom of the case and out the back of the card immediately. This should keep the warmest component pretty much isolated from the rest of the action...I hope.

Any logic/physics flaws/fails here?

Steve are you sure there is room for the H50+25mm fan?

I was looking at doing a build like this with the H50 and I wasn't sure if it would clear everything.
