Do you have bad habits/posture when sitting in a chair?

I never really thought about it much but I've noticed that I tend to have one of my legs tugged up under my knee on the chair...sometimes even crossing both legs onto the chair like I'm sitting on the floor wth.gif. Additionally...I start to use the back of the chair more (relaxing) when I'm playing my PS3 or watching a movie. It can get uncomfortable sometimes since my back is angled to the back more (obtuse with my legs). Then there's the times when I'm really focused on the screen like reading something very interesting...where I lean forward a bit with one or both of my elbows on the desk and hand(s) on my chin (elbow on the chair arm rest sometimes). I came across this about sitting properly...

You need to begin by making sure your seat is set to the right height. When correctly set your feet should be firmly on the floor and the angle between your thighs and your upper body should be between 90 and 110 degrees.

Next, sit with your bottom placed at the back of the seat of your chair. At the same time making sure that your chair’s back is giving good support to your lower back. When it’s properly positioned it will have the effect of keeping your back upright, which in turn tends to relieve pressure on your shoulders and neck.

And if you find the back doesn’t give you proper support you probably need to replace it with a ergonomic office chair. As a stop gap measure you may find a lumbar roll will provide you with the necessary support.

Lastly, and this is the most difficult part, keep your chin tucked in towards your breastbone. This has the effect of lengthening your spine and keeping your back properly aligned. The reason it’s the most difficult part is most of us have spent years doing the exact opposite craning our necks forward instead. Consequently, you will need to persevere with this one, but it will be worth it.

I usually slump, try to sit back properly but always find myself slumping.

It's the chair, I need a new one.. just never really got around to it.

The very act of sitting in a chair is one that is in conflict with how the human body wants to be aligned. Look at how many people have back trouble (just here in the U.S.) and look at the time people started reporting so much back trouble (within the last 200 years or so). When we were animals out chasing down our dinner we did not develope the kind of spinal conditions that are common now (might have gotten eaten by some animal though). In short, people cannot spend 10-12 hrs per day in a chair without sooner or latter developing issues with their spine (as I sit here typing after my second surgery and 1 st spinal fusion, on disability).

Another activity that keeps the "fix my back crew" busy is weight bearing exercises,done wrong (like squats). They really keep the offices full. You can have the greatest chair invented but still you can't spend 10 hrs a day in it as you will eventually develope issuses like degenerative disc disease (and you cannot simply re-format these type of discs).

You do realize that back in those days, people still sat in things for at least a few hours a day. Just not chairs, it could of been a stump or a homemade bench, etc. Both would be much worse than a chair. Many back problems were not reported back then because they didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it, it would of never been documented correctly. It's the same with AIDS and most diseases, we know what it is now... doesn't mean people didn't have it and didn't die from it before we knew what it was. People back then were also much more fit, and that also results in a much healthier body.

I know people who sit in chairs 15 hours a day, and have done so for over 20 years and still have 0 problems. I also know people that rarely sit down or lift things and have tons of back problems. While bad posture can increase the odds of back problems, it's not a 100% sure thing like you are making it out to be. You situation sucks, and some people definitely grab the shorter straw... however you can't just apply your situation to everyone. Not everyone's body is the same.

i probably sit in some of the worst positions for my body... its actually a pretty big worry of mine. but as of right now, my chair doesnt even fit under my desk (using my dads desk from when he was 10, its ancient and small)

so i basically have to sit slumped over, or lean back with the KB on my lap ><<br />
but im in the process of building a desk.

OH I disagree, our bodies are very much the same. They are so much the same a surgeon can expect to see just what he found in the last person he cut into when he cuts into you, maybe not in the same condition though. The concept that the human body is not designed for long term sitting is one that has been brought to my attention by literaly dozens of people involved with helping people with back issues and I have seen dozens(take a look at the statistics of just how many people report issues with their backs) from surgeons to physical therapists, they all agree that long term sitting is not something our structure is designed for, standing up and running,well that is just what we are made for.

Some interesting information here people. I'll personally try to sit as properly as I could to stay away from the long term pain that may develop in the future...otherwise I'll wait to make a new purchase when my current chair literally falls apart.
