9800GT not getting recognized in Windows 7

Ok this is really getting annoying. My friend has a 9800GT that was working a few hours ago in XP but when he upgrades to 7 and tries to install a driver it says it didn't find anything compatible with the driver. Without any drivers no 3D application can run and it's stuck at 1024x768. My friend claims this has happened before that he couldn't install a driver in Windows 7. The OS is Windows 7 32-bit Ultimate. I have tried 9800GT vista-7 32bit driver even the 9800gt driver for notebooks and still no luck.

See if this driver finds it,

Good luck.

Already tried that. Exactly the same results

Does windows update detect it? If so use that.

If it doesn't, goto your device manager, see if anything needs installing, if your GPU doesn't show. Something could be faulty. If it does, right click, install driver and direct it to the nvidia driver install folder.

Sorry about the spelling.

Windows update doesn't detect it
When going to the device manager it displays Standard VGA graphics adapter. When i try to update it it says the best driver is already installed.
Edit: Tried a few older drivers same results. The card works perfectly on XP. Crysis 2 1440x900 2nd highest detail almost playable smooth enough

This simply doesn't make sense, there's another variable occurring.

It sounds as if every installation of anything above XP is corrupt, or becomes corrupt during the upgrade, have you ever tried a full format and then installing W7 instead of upgrading it ?. And if you're upgrading be sure to remove the old driers, even though W7 is designed to simply overlap new ones with old ones.

I wonder if it's really not a 9800 GT, but even if so it would have to be a similar card to it and the same driver would work.

try putting it in another pc with win7 to check if either the card or the pci-e slot is the one making problems.

I didn't install the windows. My friend did it himself and he is a distant friend and i'm remote controlling his PC through teamviewer. I'm pretty sure it's a clean windows installation since i can't see any registry entries from older installed games.
EDIT: i don't see how this can be a hardware issue it works on XP. there isn't any spare PC i can try it on
