DO NOT get that motherboard.

It's going to give you problems right out of the box and it's by far the worst choice you could have made with an Asus AM3 board. It costs <$70.

Spend a bit more on an Asus AM3 board and get a Phenom II X4 955 instead of the 965. The 955 is basically an underclocked 965, you'd be a fool not to go with it for the -$20 price tag.

ok what motherboard would you suggest? nothing too expensive as im saving for ma gpu:(
and would i not get more ocing headroom with the 965?

i'd like to expand on this. would 6950 in crossfire be enough for these 2 games? i am getting a 6950 for now and probably add another closer to bf3/skyrim

Yes. Anyone who says you can't is an idiot imo for crossfire 6950's. Considering that these cards were not even out when the development process started for these games..

1. Will the 2gb 6950 be able to handle these games full spec, with AA/AF and all the shiny stuff? I will be playing at 1080 x something (not sure of the exact dimensions of my tv) If not, will some simple overclocking help?
2. Is there any point trying to get a 2gb 6950 with the intention of unlocking anymore?
3. Could I overclock a non-reference 2gb 6950 like the twin frozr II/III, which has improved cooling, to meet or even surpass the stock core/memory clocks of the 6970, which would obviously render unlocking pointless?
4. If anyone knows about trends in gpu price drops, how much could I expect the 6970 to drop by november?

Other Specs will be (hopefully):

AMD Phenom II X4 965 OC~ 4ghz with ASETEK 510 LC
4gb Corsair XMS3
ASUS M4N68T-M V2 NF630A
1TB SATA-III hdd

5. Im not sure what PSU i would require for this setup - would 750w be ok?
To add to the good suggestions you got so far, if you have the budget, I would say that go for the 6970 and overclock it rather than for a 6950. And if you can swing it, crossfire them ! Or you can crossfire two 6950.

Try to snag two reference 6950's and unlock em. Don't go with the 1GB versions, that's foolish. If your buying this setup with Skyrim as one of your anticipated games 1GB of VRam isn't enough. Don't get me wrong it will be enough for the vanilla version, but chalk in some of those modded High-Res textures and such and you'll chew right past 1GB.

does anybody have any opinions on getting a 2gb gtx 560 instead? i hear they overclock pretty good....

6970 is really expensive here in the UK. It costs about £80 more than the 6950.

Honestly I don't think it's worth getting the 6970 when the performance increase is very little for that sort of price.

Not sure where you live though.

just go with 6950 2gb versions

well if price is not all that different I would stick with the 6970
when I bought mine I was going for a 6870, but then I saw the 6950 for "only" 30 bucks more and was about to pick it when I saw the 6970 for 15bucks more than the 6950...plus it came with Bad Company 2 and Vietnam so I took the 6970 and don't regret of doing so....
the only problem is...that I still haven't played BC2 yet.....

My take on this, though the unlock is a great way to save money and get performance of the higher performing card, I'd rather buy the higher end card right off the bat. Way less hassel and no risk.

Yes you can unlock the 6950 to 6970 performance as long as they aren't laser cut. At the end of the day, the unlocked 6950 that's unlocked and over clocked will not reach performance of the 6970 that's over clocked.

No the MSI TFII or Lightning 6950 cards won't surpass the 6970 card that also over clocked.

If you can't afford the 6970 then it's a moot point to ask which is better because the better card is the higher performing card anyway. Be happy with the 6950 unlocked if that's what you can afford. Please tread carefully if you don't know much about unlocking. I can't help you there because I've not unlocked a 6950 but have read about some stories that went sour.

Sure I'd like a Mustang but I can only afford a Taurus, I should be happy with it and make the best of it.

Your 750 watt psu will do great with either card.

The 6950 can play all the games today, some you might have to turn down AA but it won't be an issue, just not as much eye candy. There is a very small percentage of games right now that are heavy graphical intense games. Most you will be able to play max settings.

Good luck with your new rig build and post back when you finally piece it together and let us know which way you ended up going after getting your homework done on it.
