6950 vs 6970?!?!?! - Page 3

1. Will the 2gb 6950 be able to handle these games full spec, with AA/AF and all the shiny stuff? I will be playing at 1080 x something (not sure of the exact dimensions of my tv) If not, will some simple overclocking help?
2. Is there any point trying to get a 2gb 6950 with the intention of unlocking anymore?
3. Could I overclock a non-reference 2gb 6950 like the twin frozr II/III, which has improved cooling, to meet or even surpass the stock core/memory clocks of the 6970, which would obviously render unlocking pointless?
4. If anyone knows about trends in gpu price drops, how much could I expect the 6970 to drop by november?

Other Specs will be (hopefully):

AMD Phenom II X4 965 OC~ 4ghz with ASETEK 510 LC
4gb Corsair XMS3
ASUS M4N68T-M V2 NF630A
1TB SATA-III hdd

5. Im not sure what PSU i would require for this setup - would 750w be ok?

1. Yes
2. I don't think so, You can OC TwinFrozr III/II to get the same performance as 6970 or even better.
3. Of course
4. 20-30$?

Thanks sp4wners! Ive actually been considering getting the msi TF II/III, and now have even more questions -
1. Is the difference between the two models only cooling? Which one would you adivse i buy?
2. What clocks/temps are you getting with yours?
3. Could you give me advice on the overcloking process for this card (i.e which programs to use, what voltages etc.) as im pretty much a gpu overclocking

i meant to say 'noob' after overclocking by the way, hope that makes more sense

is the 2gb vram really vital for playing at 1080p though ? does this make it more 'future-proof'?
cos i could just get a SOC 560ti 1gb

AT 1920x1800 resolution 1080p the extra VRM dosen't improve scores at all. Future proof only if your thinking of getting a second or third monitor do you see any improvement.

Thanks Arizonian- no, i would be basically sticking with the one monitor in the forseeable future. Im thinking of going for an nvidia gpu now - looking at the 560ti SOC ( a 570 would be my first choice but they seem to be pretty expensive here in the UK). Would one of these shape up against an overclocked 1gb/2gb 6950? would they be sufficient for running bf3/skyrim with all the frills?

Well the GTX 560ti is an over clockable beast and does very well gaming. Much better than an AMD 6870, but against an AMD 6950 unlocked/over clocked, no it would be about 30% less performance. However still not a bad card, the extra VRM wouldn't do any difference but the performance across the board would. In the end you need to look at your budget first, if you can afford the AMD 6950 then go for it. If not then the GTX 560 would be a better choice over the AMD 6870.

Hopefully this helps a bit, even though both seem to be in stock clock
