New Case Airflow Ideas?

Okay, so I have recently purchased some aftermarket coolers for my CF6850s. The problem I'm running into now is that they're exhausting into the case. My PC-K62 just isn't cooling those cards well enough anymore. When I run Furmark, the hit 50C and then slowly increase about 1C/min until I cut the test at 80C. I know it's just ambient temperature inside the case is increasing, otherwise it would've risen faster than that.

So I'm looking for as many ideas to try out on my case when I get back home to work on it. I have a couple ideas, but they have problems.

1. Switching my top two fans back to exhaust. The problem is all that hot air from the cards will go up through the CPU and raise its temps.

2. Putting a mid-case fan blowing right into the cards. The problem is I don't believe the K62 has a mounting spot for a fan. I could zip-tie it, but the last time I tried that it didn't work too well.

3. Adding a fan to my passive cpu heatsink. I don't really want to do that since the passive thing is just so neat, but it might help in pushing any hot air into the one exhaust fan.

4. Getting a better 120mm fan for the one exhaust fan. I want a quiet case, but this is the only exhaust fan. I might need to get something better. Maybe a KM2 since it has 120mm mounts.

I think if I had a side fan, I could exhaust that heat just fine. But the K62 doesn't, and I don't have tools for case mods. I really don't want to buy a new case already.

This should do the trick, I have it in my case and works wonders. And cheap.

Hmm.. I forgot about those. The problem is each card takes up 3 slots so I don't really know where I'd put it.

I fully understand your problem. As the 2 HD6850s are fitted with Twin Turbo Pro, huge amount of heat is being dumped inside the case. Looking from the design of the AC Twin Turbo Pro, at least half of the heat is being dumped internally. It is basically a bi-directional design.

To solve this problem, one needs to:-
1) provide a good clean air intake path for the 2 cards
2) provide a good clean escape route for the hot air exhausted. These hot air must not go through the HR-02

To accomplish this, I propose a 'top-exhaust' approach:- (See pic 1 below)
1. Setup the 2 top case 140mm fans (blue rectangles) as exhaust. These 2 fans will be responsible to extract all the hot air inside the case. The left fan will mainly be responsible to help out the passive HR-02. The right fan will provide a strong upward draft to extract all internally dumped hot air from the 2 cards (see red arrows in pic)
(Of course, the case front intake fan will bring in fresh ambient air to cool the harddisks and that portion of hot air will be drafted upward and be extracted out of the case via the right fan as well. But for simplicity, this is not shown in the airflow diagram.)

2. Orient the HR-02 (orange rectangle) facing the top of case. As passive heatsink, it has no fan of its own. It relies on the left top case 140mm fan for air movement.

3. To provide fresh ambient air for the HR-02 and the two 6850s, side panel fans are essential. As you have no tools to mod and do not want to buy a new case, the best option is to get Lancool side panels for K62.
There are 3 versions available. See pics 3, 4 and 5 below.
Both fans are to be setup as intake. The lower one provides air for the 6850s and the upper one takes care of the HR-02. See green arrows.

4. Case rear fan to be setup as slow exhaust. It should spin slow so that it will not take away air from the HR-02. It also serves to prevent hot air from the outside rear of case to seep back into the case.

Damn, I had a feeling I would need to buy a side panel. Thanks very much .

what fans are you using now ?

you could exchange all 4 of your fans for Gentle Typhoon's AP-14's or AP-15's, they have high cfm with little noise. [AP-14's if you dont have fan control, AP-15's if you can control the fans]

Also 80 degrees on the card is nothing to worry about, on auto fan i thought it was normal they run around 85 degrees in heavy gaming.

I still have stock fans, and I will be changing them out when I have a chance. I wouldn't be worried about the cards at 80 except it would keep going if I let it, and with two aftermarket coolers they shouldn't be passing 60. That's how I know it's case flow problems. AP's are almost never in stock, so I'm probably gonna get some yate loons.

The side panel is probably the best option, too bad it costs so much. When/if I get it, I'll test intake to exhaust and see what works better.

attach a fan to the expansion slots on the outside of the case (an 80mm) sucking air out of the case, ghetto but would help)
