[TheRegister] FireFox 5 (beta) Launched, Mozilla adopting Chrome style release. - Page 2

Firefox 4 is a turd, why not fix it before coming out with 5. IE9 and Firefox4 have been a web designers nightmare the last month. Chrome is the standard.

You could do this with firefox since version 3.0 or possibly earlier (too long ago, I forget).

step 1: Go to a page with a search bar (google, youtube, wikipedia, etc)
step 2: right click on that search bar and select "Add a keyword for this search"
step 3: for google I set the keyword to "g", for youtube I set it to "y"
step 4: Press Ctrl+L (or click the address bar)
step 5: type "g how to overclock" or "y funny kitten videos"

there you go.

It's funny people mentioning all these "features" of other browsers that you've been able to do forever with in FF. Nothing is faster than FF with Fasterfox and Speed DNS either. You might call it cheating but it's still faster. I can scroll down the page as it's loading unlike Chrome as well.

I use both and Chrome is a little more crash protective with each tab under its own process but the lack of low level control of the browser through add-ons is a turn off. Adblocks don't block ads from loading and doesn't stop flash ads nor can you change the user-agent or block referrers. The limitless UI customization is a plus too.

I'll have another look at FF, but still haven't seen it able to tab search things.

When I say tab search I mean, you start typing the name of the search engine, e.g. the pirate bay. Chrome will pick up that your typing the pirate bay after just 1 or 2 letters, then and option comes up to press tab and turn it into a search engine. This makes it very fast at searching for stuff on various search engines and it also feels alot smoother than using search engine bars.

Also, when I'm typing in my memorable information into my online banking, I have to use drop down boxes to select my letter or number, Chrome let's me just type the letter or number on my keyboard but fire fox doesn't.

These are small things, but small things that I do a lot and actually really speed up my internet use. If someone has a way of doing these in FireFox I'd love to know because FireFox really has that key aspect.....Download management tools and ad-block

I know what you mean, I really want that in FF. Google Instant search in the bar. If that's already possible, I want to know how!

Why is it that every time that the release of a new version a browser other than Chrome gets posted here, there's some Chrome user saying "i can't live without the 'omnibar' ", event though all major browsers have had the same feature for a long time already. And some like for example Opera have a much more advanced version of it too...

As far as keyword searching, FF was the one to invent that. Just make a bookmark of the site with %s in the search variable such as: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s
Then you just type "wiki something" and press enter.
Or "lj http://%s.livejournal.com/" will transform "lj someuser" to http://someuser.livejournal.com/

You can also use add-ons to set up the same thing without making a bookmark: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir...rl-alias-8703/ Your way with Chrome requires you to have visited the site already and leave it saved in your history. If you ever clear the browsing data you lose that feature. I can't stand not having keyword bookmarks in Chrome. Makes it so much easier visiting frequent sites like OCN by only typing one or two letters and pressing enter.

Another method might be using AwesomebarHD: https://mozillalabs.com/prospector/2...nd-tab-assist/

Another nice feature is if you're typing a reply on a forum and you accidently click a link or hit the back button, when you go back to the reply page your form data will be re-entered without losing it. You can even use add-ons to have it auto saved permanently so even if you close the browser and re-open it'll can put it back: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/fir...extarea-cache/
