1 GB/s local decreasing transfer!! help please!

Thread Starter
This is a continuation of a previous post.

I have a WHS pc built and used specifically for server use. It has a quad core with 4gb ram and a 870 chipset MOBO which has a 1 GB.s connection.

The problem that I am having it the way it communicates with my main networked (wired) pc which has a 1 GB/s connection.

I am ripping images of my BLU RAYS for back up and local network streaming purposes. These files are 35-45 GB.

Initially the snow connection speed was due to a low quality CAT5 cable.
I recently up graded to High quality CAT 6 and I am now registering at 1GB/s
on all networked pc's.

My main computer is receiving from the server at 80-110 MB/s, this is similar to the other computer alwo networked to the server.

HOWEVER the main difference is that I am getting low UP speed to the server, in contrast to the other networked pc's.

After defragmenting my computer I did increase my up speed form about 5-10 MB/s to about 20-30 MB/s but other computer on the same network are UPPING 50-80 MB/s.

Also when I transfer LARGE blu ray files, the the transfer starts at 25-30 MB/s but continues to decrease in speed. after a munute it decreases to 25-20 MB/s, after 3 minutes 20-15 MB/s, after 5 minutes 10-6 MB/s?

Many ppl have offered great ideas and I have worked through them but nothing has effectively SOLVED this problem.

I appologize if this is a silly question, I do not have much experience with networking as this is my first server build.

Any Ideas would be helpful to get the ideas rolling.

Thanks guys,
Jason

If the upload speed from the other pcs to the server is fine, then it could just be a problem with your built in ethernet adapter. I would put in a pcie NIC and try it that way. I would suggest that you go with an Intel NIC. Hope this helps.

I agree. You could also try a different port on the switch. Try one that is known to be good with another pc.

1Gbps = 125MB/s

Unless you're copying to/from SSD's or striped RAID arrays, you're pretty much limited by HDD throughput so 80~110MB/s is pretty awesome.

It's possible that WHS is doing Drive Balancing while you're copying files which can cause the slowdowns you're seeing. Not really familiar with WHS, but I've never really seen network transfers higher than 40MB/s initiated from an XP machine. Typically, I just get around 25~30MB/s or so. Both Windows Vista and 7 are much improved in this regard as I'm pretty much reaching platter speeds with those during network transfers.

Try running iperf on both machines to see if it's actually your network connection that's causing the issue or just some Windows weirdness.

When you're transferring the 40GB of blu ray rip, how many files are there? If they are only a few really large files, then I would be a little concerned as well, cause I get 50 MB+ throughput on my gigabit network to my server without issue with only a few files. If it's many files then you will experience a lot of slow down for the file table to write each file.

Based on my own rips, if he's ripping to Blu-ray folders, then it's a few large files (mostly m2ts). If he's ripping to ISO, then it's one really large file (25~50GB) per disc.
