Is this motherboard bad for crossfire?

The ASUS M5A88-V EVO AM3+ http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16813131733 has:

1 - PCIE 2.0 x 16
and
1 - PCIE 2.0 x 4

I am looking to upgrade my motherboard to an AM3+ and thought this would be good initially, but after noticing that the second pcie 2.0 slot is limited to x4 I am having second thoughts.

I guess my question is would having the second pcie slot limited to x4 hinder crossfire 5850s.

To my knowledge, a mobo that has a 4x slot will not be as fast as a 16x slot. The 16x slot multiplies the slot 16 times and a 4x slot will only multiply 4 times. Therefore, if you intend to crossfire an X16 card you will miss out on some potential speed.

If it was 16-8 it wouldn't be a problem, but 4.

Yeah, you wont use the CF to it's full potential.

To my knowlegde there isnt the big performance difference between x4, x8 and x16 .. Only if you are totally hunting for those last FPS's you shouldnt see any major difference in daily use
But obviously you won't use CF in it's full potential..

Please correct me if I'm wrong ..

Well it depends on what you are trying to Crossfire. If it is two 5770's (like myself) the 16-4x config does not really effect the performance. But if you are running something more like 5870's then you would want something more like 16-16x. It looks like a good board, but I really do not like the setup of the SATA ports, and the IDE socket ruins the look. But thats all aesthetic.

Depending on what card you stuff into the x4 slot. Lower/Mid-end cards shouldn'thave a problem. But you stuff something like a 6970/6990 or 580/590 then you will see some performance hit but only like ~20% (guessing number there don't quote me).

But either way give this article a read.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD...s/M5A88V_EVO/#

it supports crossfire ! But the second pcie x16 is running at x4

lets say you have a 16x PCIE card in a 4x slot, it will run at 1/4th the speed. Go with the 2 16x slots if you want to run a badass CXF

Okay thanks for all the replies.
Since it will probably limit 2 5850s I'll wait for more AM3+ boards to come into newegg.ca before making a purchase.

I'd wait, since there's more AM3+ boards around the corner, but you should be fine:

You could always get this board:

Thanks for the performance review link! Very informative.
Since I've already developed a preference for Asus boards so I'll just wait for more to come into newegg.
