[XFX] XFX Triple Display Monitor Stand - Page 7

I'm actually thinking about purchasing a triple monitor stand. How much deskspace does that Cotytech take? That XFX stand is pretty nice, but i'm not exactly feeling like spending that kind of money on it.

Gear mentioned in this thread:

I think you doubt the effectiveness of wood as a building material, at one point, pretty much everything was built out of it. In this case you would want to use a harder wood

Sizing the wood members to make the stand work would defeat the purpose of using the stand to give you more desktop space as the wooden members would need to be substantially larger than the metal counterparts - not to mention the size of the connections.

For ~$400, it should be sturdy enough to support 30" monitors.

That said, it is a challenge to find stands that explicitly support 30" monitors. Many stands do work with a 30" but the vendor data sheet doesn't say so.

I'm using the Humanscale M7 with my Apple 30" and when I do EyeFinity with the 2 Dell 3008s, I swivel the Apple over to my other desk with the 3008s.

If we assume an average monitor is 23", using the Dell u2311H we can assume that the monitor weighs ~12lbs. To make it easier to me, we'll call that 5.45 kg. The real stress here is going to be the torque. The monitor is 55cm (or 21.6") wide, so we'll use that as distance from the support. Works out to roughly 30N*m. A good 2"x4" with some solid screws should be able to handle that fine, especially with a counterweight from the other monitor.

Nice idea.. but I guess you will have to buy a specific monitor that can fit in this?

Easier for you, maybe, but I deal with kip*ft all day long. And your last sentence doesn't make sense. Globally, you are balancing the weight in one direction, not the other two, and global balance doesn't solve local imbalance (i.e. each arm to each monitor; the monitors aren't going to be in a single plane). Furthmore, a 2"x4" (which is actually 1.5"x3.5") with a couple of screws is not going to be rigid enough to stay still if there is any sort of motion in the room.

But none of this matters; someone simply suggested that wooden mount could be made to perform as well and I am pointing out that it is much more complicated than it looks to make such a blanket statement.

The last statement was about global balance, yes. And I guess we'll just have to agree to diagree. I've both seen and used off the shelf 2x4s (which as you said are not 2"x4", but that has no relevance to the topic at hand) to support much more force than that with 4 or 5 screws. There should be little to no movement, and I'd expect the base to fail first anyway if that was the case, unless that was pretty huge.

So while you can't just throw some wooden thing together, it doesn't represent much of an engineering challenge. I'd bet that anyone with a standard quantity of common sense and craftsmanship that comes from building home projects would be able to put it together.
