CrossfireX 16x-4x Config or 8x-8x?

Thread Starter
Sooo I am currently running two XFX 5770's on my 890FXA-GD70 Motherboard.

When I leave a 1 slot space between my cards they run at 16x-4x, but when I stack them on top of each other they run 8x-8x. Which is better or more efficient? I usually game, and benchmark with 3Dmark11.

Input? Thanks InerTia*

Shouldn't the first 2 PCI-E be 16-16?

Looking at the MSI site it says that PCIE slot 1 and 5 support 16x/16x config (slots 3 and 6 must be empty) so you should be running that ....

Regardless of whether or not your motherboard should be running 16x/16x or not, 8x/8x would run a lot better than 16x/4x.

Well there is still one slot of space beneath so it should get enough air but if you really dont want to you can run 8x/8x with next to no performance loss (there may be some (I remeber numbers 3-5% but not sure) in benchmarks but not in games...)

8x/8x will run about 5-10% faster than 16x/4x. The difference between 16x/16x and 8x/8x however is absolutely minimal, especially on mid-range cards like the 5770s. Between those two, I'd try the extra space on 16x/16x just for cooling reasons. I don't see any problems putting the card at the bottom of your board.
