Why isn't BOINC as popular as Folding?

Thread Starter
As the title says .

I just looked in to BOINC and I would have assumed more people would be using it as they can dedicate their processing power toward a multitude of causes (including protein folding) as oppose JUST protein folding..

I think folding came first

BOINC has multiple useless choices for their distributed computing projects, such as SETI@Home. All in all, F@H is more rewarding. We need to fix our problems on Earth before we try looking for aliens.

So why did you single out SETI?

I think primarily because of the timing. If there were people who had invested in getting a ton of BOINC points first, then folding would not be as popular. People just don't want to give up their edge to start on something new.

BOINC is a platform for multiple projects, F@H is a project. It's not a fair comparison. I think when we combine all those different project's BOINC might have more users then folding@home...

BOINC just sounds stupid...

This saddens me. This is the same train of thought that says we should not go to Mars until we "fix our problems on Earth". We, as a society, gained so much in the way of tech and helping those on Earth from our trips to the moon. The tech we would gain from going to Mars would go far in fixing the problems on Earth.

The billion dollar satellite is just the end result of a billion dollars put into our economy, used to support the families of those people who worked on the project. It kept people off welfare. If things go well, the people who paid that billion dollars will recoup their money off the satellite. Win win. I suppose we could just take that billion from those who have it using taxes, then spend that money feeding people who don't have a job. I don't see that as a long term solution for humanity.

Let's pay people to find life. To advance our tech while trying to do so, and in doing so make everyone's life better.

If we find intelligent life a few thousand light years away, why would it matter. I get irritated waiting 30 minutes for a text message response, 10,000 years between messages....pffft.
