I just built a 2000 usd 1366rig for the first time, and also bought a 1155 mobo, cpu, and ram so I shouldn't have to upgrade to new sockets any time soon... but wouldn't mind getting a 6 core. I wouldn't have to upgrade, but I'll have to try and talk myself out of it if I ever get the urge... which come on we all do when we get so much into hardware haha am I right?
I am the same I would rather one new, depends on the price really and it can be better buying second hand then new because you can know what it will overclock like before you buy.

The 970 is clearly much better value but it doesnt OC as good in general, Plus the 990X has a better IMC.

So I would go a 990X while others would rather the 970.

Thanks, Sir Overkill.

hey guys (first time poster, longtime fan) just chasing alittle help im trying to achieve some goals for my setup atm that i think are realistic my specs are as follows.X58A-OC ,990X (koolance cpu-370) 3 EVGA 570,s (EK FC Blocks) 12gig dominator gt @2000,1200 silent pro psu. With my benching i have achieved a few vantage/3dmark11 runs @4.6 but its a lottery to get a consistent number of benchers at this speed (temps never exceed 50) i have llc @ lev2 and set vcore to around the 1.45v mark but as i said my stableness is far from certain,if at all possible if someone could please give me some idea as to what i should be setting my voltages at ( as i dont have a clue ) i would be really greatful.im sure i could get it stable at 4.8ish enough at least to run a few benchies and such that would be fantastic!.oh ps all the other settings in bios are pretty much left alone,i only really change uncore to 15X and the other one to X36..LOL as i said im a huge noobie, anyways enough of the rant, any help would be great!

Take out memory sticks, 12gb is not needed for good runs and it is easier for imc with less qpi/vtt

Anyway i think you have bad chip so 4.8 may be out of reach

This was mine vantage when i bought 980x to check out how good it is, not the best one but not the worst either

I get the feeling I must just have a really bad chip Granted, I'm being conservative with voltages, but it seems everyone is getting further than me with lower volts.

Anyway, nice clocks there

After reading this thread I think I will go with the 3960x to overclock. It would be pointless to go from my 970 i7 to the 990x. I might even get worse overclocks if I get a bad chip. For gaming I have my 970 i7 @4.8ghz 1.4v. With prime95 I am able to withstand a 15 min stress test @ 4.7ghz 1.4v. I did not want to stress it more as I only game and is stable enough for that. I have a thread open on my current cpu.
