Windows games stuttering PLEASE HELP!

Thread Starter
Ok, so about two weeks ago all my games developed this weird .1 millisecond stutter every second or so, despite high frame rates.

Its HORRIBLE and makes all my games unplayable, so ordered a temporary replacement 8600gt and sent my 5850 to rma. Well i just received and installed the 8600gt and the problem is STILL there.

I can't believe that it wasn't my GPU... I'm starting to think it might be my windows installation, but i don't want to waste all that time to reinstall only to keep the problem.

I remember that i cleaned the cpu socket and motherboard with this electronics air cleaner. Its was like compressed air but it was chemical based but said safe for computers...Do you think that could be it? what should i do?!?!

Overclock.net!!! Save me from my stupidity!!!!

Hmm.. If you have high frame rates it is usually 1.) CPU 2.) Un-optimised game engine 3.) Hard drive/RAM. Right now, i would start looking at your hard drive/RAM.

Check your hard drive for fragmentation, also make sure your hard drive is not too full.

Check to see how much RAM you are using during games.

If your hard drive is like 80% fragmented, yeah, your games will stutter (i know this from experience).

Other than blowing air inside you computer, what else changed 2 weeks ago? Did you load any new programs, update any drivers? Have you looked at win services or performance monitor to see exactly what is running in the background? Stuff like this is really hard to nail down... I suspect something in windows causing the problem.

Just defragmented a week ago and it was like 2 percent fragmented.
Ummm my ram has this weird problem but anyways it forces me to run it in single channel mode, but has never caused this problem.
My hard drive seems to be the problem to me...but i don't want to remove all my programs to reinstall. is their anyway i can reinstall and keep my installed programs?

Do you mean "reinstall windows and keep your installed programs?"

Not sure what you mean....are you implying reformatting?

If it's a Windows problem sometimes a good reformat is what is needed. (That is a lot of work, i do that only as a last resort) You can use non-destructive partitioning to put windows on it's own partition, and reinstall windows without loosing any of your stuff.

You could try Memtest86+ (OCN Download section) to make sure there is nothing weird going on with your RAM.

EDIT: Oopps. Before you go doing anything drastic, you should check your drivers and check these games for updates. Make sure the game did not "auto-update" and that is what is causing the problem. If it is a Windows problem try a system restore. I doubt a system restore will fix your problem, but for the 2 minutes it takes it is certainly worth a try.

Sounds like you got an antivirus program running in the background. Or some other resource hog.

Go in to task manager and look for any programs running that shouldn't be.

As far as HDD"s being too full, I only have 8GB of free space left and everything still runs as smooth as can be.

try forcing vsync on? I find my games run smoother with it. Sometimes it can be the simple things.
Do a virus/spyware scan.
Verify the game cache in your games (if they are within steam)
Do you have correct audio driver for onboard sound?
