Research stage of my first build $1800-$2000ish can't start till Aug :(

Ok to start i Won't be home from Afghanistan till early Aug. time frame. i understand there are some things upcoming to take into consideration like AMD's bulldozers and possibly more z68 boards.

i mainly want to build this cause it's something i've wanted to do for a long long time. i love to tinker probably more then i even care about the end results, if that makes sense? i've modded a few of my video game systems just cause its possible then dont even play them (just as an example). i will use this for gaming and plan to overclock everything that i can just for the fun of doing it.

so as of now i am kind of shooting for a Win 7 home premium, i5 2500k build and the budget isnt set in stone i might be willing to push it just a little bit further.

here is a rough list of what i got in mind so far:

ASUS MAXIMUS IV EXTREME- possibly the z68 version if its out by then. i know its overkill but im too intrigued to pass up all its crazy features

EVGA GTX 570 or GTX 560ti- probably going sli down the road just looking to run games at max settings at full FPS on one monitor (probably no bigger than 24") maybe dabble with 3D

CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 4GB 2000mhz cas 8- any problem with these? i know price but plenty of room to play with right? never overclocked much before and the few times i have i didnt mess with RAM im still a noob

ZALMAN CNPS10X Performa- or some other sort of cheap cooler for now i would kind of like to water cool cpu and maybe gpu eventually but probably not right off the bat

Raven RV02 ew-not the best to water cool i know but i really like it all around and ill make it work when that day comes. i do plan to change the front led's to red like many have done (decided that before i actually found out it's a very very common thing but o well). i want to stealth mod the cd drive with the bay covers the case comes with. probably put some red lighting in it but i want to make sure its a good red not pinkish... need some suggestions on lighting.
i want to do more i would love some suggestions i want this case to be as unique as i can get it with out spending a fortune. i even looked into water transfer printing dynamicfinishes.com not too bad pricing but kind of decided i'll probably regret it.

SILVERSTONE ST85F-P 850W Fully Modular- again more than i need but i figure it's something everyone says not to skimp on and leaves plenty of room for upgrades? i was also told it doesnt hurt to go a little higher because of capacitor aging?

Hard drive- so i was thinking ocz vertex 3 120gb is very tempting. would it really be worth it or should i save the money and go with vertex 2? for data WD caviar black 750GB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s? i dont need tons of storage maybe that or 1TB

MDPC Sleeving
I also want to sleeve all the wires individually in mostly black throw in some red and maybe make sure all my connectors are black, red heat shrink the black sleeves and black the few red sleeves. maybe one more color for contrast? ideas?
what would be my best bet for tools the 2 they have on their website? i know i could get by with out but how much faster/easier would it make it?

as this is my first build and i want it to last for a while and be something i can be proud of any and all help is very appreciated. it kinda sux i have to wait so long to start building it but maybe it's better off this way so i dont rush into it. thanks in advance for advice... sorry for the wall of text

It's very difficult to predict what will happen in 3 months, especially with the launch of BD and IB imminent.

Sound card?

MB (as you mentioned) is overkill.

RAM? I'd drop the motherboard and grab 8gb.

The Zalman CNPs10x peforma is a good CPU cooler: holds my i5 under 50ºC under load at 4.2 GHz.

just cause its cheap doesn't mean its bad

Everything looks rock solid but i have a few recommendations

Go for the samsung spinpoint f3 1tb hdd, Its faster and cheaper than the one you have selected.

Although a very nice motherboard the extra price for it will not be beneficial to you unless you plan on using all of it's features. If your still after a good high end motherboard go for the gigabyte p67/z68 ud5 or maybe the asus p8 p67/z68 pro or deluxe.

As for a cpu cooler i love my zalman nps9900 max it looks good and performs very well i can hold a 5ghz overclock without temps being an issue. How is the airflow through your selected case? I feel this is important to keep thing cool so read and re- read all the reviews you can.

As for your gpu both of those cards are ace!. I would also look at the ati hd 6970 or crossfire 6950's

Most of all enjoy your build!

Cases like the Raven series having the motherboard oriented upside down are designed for 'strong bottom intake + top exhaust'. This cooling design matches graphics cards with 'centrifugal fan intake + rear exhaust' very well. The uni-directional cooling of such graphics cards fits well into these cases. See pic 1 for an example.

However, there are many cards with other cooling design. Pics 2 and 3 are examples.
When these cards are placed inside a Raven case, thermal management is a huge challenge. See pic 4 below for placing a 'side intake + front/rear exhaust' card inside a RV01.

So, when you decide to use this type of case, make sure you choose a graphic card with the basic traditional cooling design.
(Of course, watercooling the graphic card will exempt you from this requirement.)

It is good to iron out these things at the 'research stage'.

I personally go for the best motherboard I can get first and worry about the ram secondary. Can always easily add more ram at a later point, replacing a board for one with more features is significantly more of a pain. The Max IV-E is a bit of overkill, but if you envision using any or all the extra features at some point down the road, having them already available is a win.
I would however keep in mind that BD and IB are due out about then and either of those setups may be more of what you eventually want.

Also while a soundcard would likely be a good addition to this whole ensemble, it is not an absolute, must get right now, need. It can always be added in later.

thanks for the good points.
i was thinking about this. i'm having trouble finding a gtx 560ti that uses the cooling as you described. i've seen a few 570's like that but no 560ti

as for the motherboard i may end up changing my mind but i was maybe hoping when z68 version comes maybe the price would drop on p67. would it be a bad idea to get an open box one for like $100 less
Open box Asus Maximus IV Ext

for the ram i was was under the impression 4gb was all the more gaming would use, but i did plan on upgrading it to 8gb later on

the spinpoint f3 definitely looks like a better option for HDD

how big is the difference having a sound card? i've never had one. what are some good ones?

i will keep that ZALMAN CNPS9900MAX-R cooler in mind if i end up cutting back elsewhere. it seems to have some good reviews and it looks good as well.

any thoughts on the power supply and sleeving? i really would rather pay a little bit for the tools if its gonna help me save time cause using the staple method looks like it could take a bit more time
