Are there unused RAM sticks when RAM is not being used much?

Probably a stupid question, but the reason I ask it is because I have been trying to find the cause for my random nvlddmkm crashes in games.

I use Slot 1, 3 and 5 for 6GB triple-channel.

I tested one of each 2GB RAM stick at a time in memtest86 and all had 15 Passes & 0 Errors for 5 hours each.

But when I re-seated them back I didn't place them all exactly where they were before. So Stick #1 swapped places with Stick #3.

So far I hadn't any crashes... yet. Would it be possible that if Stick #1 had some fault not detected by memtest the reason I'm not crashing now is because Stick #1 is in Slot 5 and isn't being used much? The games in which I crashed never used much more than 1.5GB of RAM or so.

Basically I'm asking if I'm only using, say, 40% of the 6GB RAM will the stick on Slot 5 be left unused? I guess no since as the name implies the memory is randomly accessed?

Thanks

No all of it will get used --but just a little.

As for your error, that's an Nvidia driver error. I think you're barking up the wrong tree worrying about your system RAM.

I haven't filled specs since I seem to be out of trouble for now at least... I am already also on other forums trying to figure the source of the crashes. But I'll fill them anyway if you want...

What I came here for wasn't really to ask help on solving a problem, but to know more about how RAM works and if it could be possible that swapping RAM sticks would solve or perhaps mask a RAM problem.

I know it seems unlikely that RAM is the cause of the crash, but I've read reports that replacing RAM solved the problem for them.

All of the RAM sticks get used. Just in small amounts as I mentioned earlier.

Your nvlddmkm error, is a specific error to your Nvidia graphics card. More often than not it's Nvidia's crappy drivers. Especially if you're trying to use an older card, this error seems to rear its ugly head. Try a different driver, preferably an older one that you have used before without errors.

Thanks for the info.

As for the drivers I was on 270.61 - crash, reverted to 267.24 - crash. Tried 197.45 - crash. Now on 260.99 drivers, yet to see a crash.

Some of the older hardware doesn't work well with the newer drivers. I have some 9600 GSO's that I used for folding that are just super finicky about drivers. With the older drivers (175.xx, 180.xx) they worked very well, but once the new hardware came out, it's really hit or miss.

I had a similar memory issue with an x58-ud5 when I got a new dominator gt memory kit, put it in & crashing constantly.
I tested each stick individually in all slots & all was well, all 3 back in & crash. I had them out & was going to take them back but gave it another shot, put them back in & was stable & they overclocked well.
I marked the sticks & could reproduce it when swapping them around, so with some boards it does seem like the sticks like particular slots.
Haven't had issues with them in any other board but that one, I have 6 memory kits now & used 7 or 8 boards since, never seen it again except that 1 combination.

For your question, in triple channel I would imagine that all the modules are being utilized but not to their full capacity. If you filled all 6 slots I really don't know if the 3 secondary modules would be used at all or not if there wasn't the demand.

That's definitely interesting. Wonder if the same could be happening to me. Can't be sure though as I've changed several things at the same time. I might try back rolling back some things if I don't get a crash for a long time, such as lowering VCore a notch etc. Thanks for the info.
