Increasing the distance between speakers?

Thread Starter
Ok so i have my 2.1 speakers here that have a really short legnth between the satellites.

Can i open up the speakers and just change the entire wire?
what kind of wire would i use for this? or does it even make any difference?
and would i lose quality.

Thanks

What kinda speakers do you have? I mean.. I'm sure you could strip away the outside covering and hook up some speaker wire. It's not gonna make a huge sound difference with most 2.1 systems. Just don't get super crappy wire.

why not just extend the wires? And no expensive speaker wire and cheap ones are more of a scam than anything else. Thickness starts to play a roll with bigger setups and amplifiers
post #5 of 13
What you do depends on your abilities. You could open up the speaker and desolder and remove old wires, and replace with new wires.

Fine stranded speaker wire is best, the length of the wire needs to be a larger gauge wire over greater distance than the original, along with needing to be larger for more powerful amplifiers and higher wattage speakers.

What connection do the speaker wires have at the end opposite of the speaker? You can get crimp connectors or solder on connectors depending on what is there.

Radio Shack probably has what you need, but a little pricier than what you may find online.

all you need is some wire of the same length and some wire nuts of the appropriate size. Easier than opening it all up

Alright i opened the left speaker, the one with just the speaker in it (no circuitry)

The wire with the insulation on looks like this big thick thing, the wires inside are TINY. So that means i can just simply cut a long 3.5mm cable and use that wire... It only needs be be about a foot longer. do i need to change out the whole wire for that? or just use the same thickness wire and make the existing one longer?
Its just a standard 2.1 setup, the wire im extending is the one that goes from the right speaker to the left.

So, it is hardwired, no plugs, or terminals? One wire from inside the right to inside the left leaves less chance for a poor connection between speakers and pulled wires that come out of wire nuts. Your call, but I would do the whole wire myself. A little extra for play would not hurt.

why open up the thing if you can cut the wire at the other end and extent it? Wonder if that speaker would still have the same sound after opening it up

Ok i did it today. Opened up the speakers and changed out the wire works perfectly now
