You know, it'd be worth a sticky if you did:

I'd throw that in the stickies straight away since we get so many of these questions here
What is wrong with only stating the one's advantages? There is nothing that said the forum must be FAIR. In fact it is quite the opposite and we must live with that fact... PEACEABLY. Which I believe we are.

Even moderators such as yourself have bias, but I would suggest that it also not be abused.

That being said, there is hardly ever room for a 3rd party opinion so I urge you to consider Symbian^3 on the Nokia N8. Go up and read my comparison, and yes of course it also has downfalls just like the other OSes and Phones.

Well that goes well outside the scope of what I made the thread for. I set out to have Android users tell me why they think their phone is better than an iPhone essentially, and then I've just been countering with what essentially boils down to "iPhone can do that too" for many. Not many disadvantages are going to surface with this formula. WP7 isn't even being talked about.

I never said I would be making a thorough comparison for both sides. I don't need the other side because I know it. The OP is from an iPhone user looking to see if Android users can give him a reason to sway or switch.

I appreciate the sticky-incentive , but we'll see where the thread evolves to, assuming it does any evolving at all.

ok, just a little misunderstanding, this thread could still cause me a headache though(all we need is one person who doesn't really like android and starts attacking you guys for it to go pear shaped). I shall be keeping a close eye on this thread

oh yeah, my android advantages:
-very customisable
-pretty easy to use
-many free services offered by google
...and some disadvantages
-most are absolutely terrible when stock
-carriers/manufacturers try to stop you hacking at every turn
-not very optimised

Please don't close this just yet.
They all bring very Valid points!!
I am on my first smart phone, which is a Droid Incredible.
I love it, compared to an Iphone but of course I am biased.
Anyways.
After messing with my girlfriends Ipod Touch*proper name btw, I've jail broken it used some functions that comes with it.
They are almost on the same level, however to me.. in the big picture of things.. it all comes down to how things look and what different devices that utilize the OS's.
With Android like said before.. comes in all shapes and forms with IOS only a few devices come into play*Ipod, Ipod Touch, Ipad and Iphone. People nowadays want more variety, more choices and such*I know guys this has been said before!!
With WinMo out now there are MORE choices which is good for us as users.. like how Intel and AMD.. AMD and Nvidia, Windows and IOS. All kinds of choices.

To OP.. I applaud you with this thread as ppl that are unfamiliar with the different aspects of mobile devices that even I didn't even know the Iphone can do..It's an amazing device in it's own right.. as with all others.
I will still keep my HTC Incredible and still tinker with my girlfriends Ipod Touch.

That is all.

For me, the biggest pro was that my android phone(Optimus S) was a free upgrade. Factor in a bit of overclocking and a root to get rid of the modified sprint os and I have a powerful, yet free, android phone. Does everything I used to use my iPod for thanks to doubletwist and an ever growing market.

No i can assure you ive had plenty of exp. modding iphones/ipods. As soon as i switched i knew i would never go back to iOS. The things you can do on Android simply wont work with apple, the OS simply doesnt allow it, I mean custom iOS roms on the iPhone? Never in a million years will apple let that happen.

Bottom line.
Both OSes are well devoloped and are fantastic to use for all purposes. It comes down to do you want
Android- Modding, custimization, your own "feel" for the phone.
Apple- Simplicity.

I have to admit ive gotten alot of headaches from android but only because i wanted it to work a certain way or it do something it wasnt designed for, and i havnt had any with apple.

I really like the choice of hardware available. I absolutely love the hardware keyboard on my Droid/Milestone2, I hate typing with the software keyboard.

My Dad is thinking of ditching his Iphone 4 so he can get a phone with a keyboard - he has a fair bit of trouble with typing, even after a few months.

If they came out with an Iphone with a keyboard, I'd probably jump ship as it is so much easier to handle media on Ios.

Pitching in because I'm awesome. :3

1. Hacks, Flashes, Kernels and ROMs.

Whether an iPhone is jailbroken or not, it simply could not compare to what a rooted Android phone can bring to the table. Besides the UI enhancements which are also possible on iOS (but IMO still limited on that front) we have this thing called custom recovery and custom ROM. Tired of the crappy old stock Android? Flash CyanogenMod 7 or MIUI. HSDPA disabled by big bad AT&T? Bring on a prop.build editor and activate the feature with a couple of command lines. Why get stuck with 720p recording? Hack that phone and get 1080p as standard. Want better performing call quality and net connection? Flash a new radio build that's optimized by developers. All of this is rather more intuitive in Android, which frankly really functions as a mobile version of Linux. You can have far more user control over everything because the ecosystem allows it.

2. Hardware Variety and Compatibility

One good thing with Google flooding the market with Android devices is that it could cover almost all price points with multiple devices. There are low-end budget smartphones like the Motorola Bravo or the HTC Legend, while there are also the powerhouses like the Samsung Galaxy S II and Motorola Atrix 4G. You simply have more availability of the operating system because it just runs on almost anything - even others not designed to run it such as the HTC HD2. And despite this "fragmentation" of hardware, most available apps in the Marketplace are wholly compatible with these devices and if not, people can just ask a developer to fix the issue.

3. Developer Support

With all this talk about openness, one can't help but bring up the community powering the Android platform. There's simply a huge following on Google's OS because it gives developers the flexibility to work on it. They have access to the source code, even ones custom-built by OEM manufacturers such as HTC or Samsung. This allows them to quickly develop applications and tweaks, without the penalty of tight monitoring over their work. The more freedom they have the more interesting their products will be - just take a look at the thousands of new mods coming out of almost every device. Overclocking kernels on the ASUS Transformer was just released, and the Motorola Atrix 4G's signed bootloader is almost getting a full circumvention through a custom recovery. Whatever limitations of the Android system could be or imposed upon by manufacturers and carriers, they have their own solutions. Nothing's stopping them; same could never be said with Apple's rather strict control on its precious iOS.
