i7 950 + Dominator GT 2000

I'm going to be using Asus Rampage 3 Extreme.
RAM Package: Corsair CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 Dominator GT 6GB Memory

To my understanding an overclock is required to get the ram running with the 950, I'm fitting this in an Antec 1200 case for what I've heard is decent airflow/cooling.

Two questions: Should the ram be operable and correctly recognized if I enter the Extreme Tweaker section of BIOS, select DRAM frequency of DDR3-1866, set VDIMM to 1.65V and VTT to around 1.30~1.35V.

Secondly:
Will I get away with stock CPU cooling on the overclock required, even if it's only temporarily stock cooling.

Thanks!

That should do it to set up the memory, VTT will really depend on the chip (950 isn't a particularly strong IMC). 2000Mhz can take anywhere from 1.4 - 1.6V, 1866 will be a bit easier.

Stock coolers suck, you could get some overclock but temps will not be too good.

Stock CPU cooling will have little to no effect on overclocking the RAM. But you might have issues with the run off of the top down fan on the Intel heatsink blowing hot air towards the RAM, Northbridge and MOSFETs. Still nothing that should be life threatening on a stock CPU clock. RAM still shouldn't get too hot, especially not Dominators.

If I was to purchase an i7-960 instead, would I need to overclock?
I'm really just looking for a LGA1366 Socket CPU which will run that RAM without any general issues.

Thanks for the quick feedback guys!

I haven't heard too much about the 960 & how the IMC is. The gulftowns are easier for memory overclocking since they only need 1.5x uncore to memory ratio whereas the bloomfields need 2x minimum.
For general PC use the memory isn't a huge factor in performance, benchmarking is where you really see the difference. You could run lower frequency (~1600mhz) & tighten up the timings for 24/7 use, & just turn up the memory when running something that really benefits from the higher frequency until you get some better cooling.
