[Gamespy.com] Lord British wants you back in his kingdom

The life cycle of a successful massively multiplayer online game, like any breakout offline or single-player game, always follows the same trajectory: It grabs some headlines, eventually gets oversaturated, maybe gets parodied by South Park, and then eventually fades from the mainstream's point of view. Unlike offline or single-player games, online and MMO titles have a built-in shelf life. Sooner or later, they're getting ink in gaming mags or blogs again -- but this time, it's because their servers are getting turned off. And with that, an entire world vanishes for all eternity, when it was there just a moment before. In Abandoned Ware, one gamer becomes a field reporter for these once-huge MMOs, before the inevitable eradicates them forever.

Here's the shard info ussually about 1400-2000 players online consistantly. http://inporylem.com/

Sigh... when the idea of a persistant world meant something in an MMO.

MUDS were the same way, it actually took a while to learn how to "play" the game before you were even able to start advancing.

My personal favorite was Tharsis Gate if anyone still muds check it out

Ahh UO! Played that for a good 5 or so years back in the day... late 90s. Was great then but of course, other things come about. It's amazing to see it last this long, if even more of the "traditional" content is in fact on a private server.

I might suspect that he would have a warmer welcome on one of the real shards. Jumping in to a private shard, made by hardcore old-schoolers for hardcore old-schoolers...doesn't it seem like the "cold shoulder" response he got would be sort of expected?

UO remains the king of MMOs.
