Just A New Guy

Thread Starter
Hi everyone. I'm pretty new to OCN (and foruming and overclocking and pretty much everything to do with computer components) and was wondering; would it be better spend £1000+ on buying then building my own PC, or to go with a cheaper (£600) alternative and just add the things I want? Specs on both the machines below;

Custom Build
Processor: Intel i5-2500k @ 3.30GHz (Planned overclock to 5.0GHz)
Memory: 8GB DDR3
Mo. Bo.: Asrock P67 Pro3
GC: Palit GTX460 768Mb
Hard Drive: 3TB (x2 1.5TB HDDs)
Price: £1000+

Pre-made
Processor: i5-2300 (Swap for i5-2500k)
RAM: 6GB DDR3 (Might change, might not)
GC: nVIDIA GeForce GT420 1GB (Probably would swap)
Mo. Bo.: No info provided
Hard Drive: 1TB
Price: £600 (With Replacements, £877.50 (-RAM £944.29 with RAM))

chances are the ram and mobo are gonna be pretty naff, i.e like something from a Dell...also a GT420 is nowhere near as good as a gtx 460. And do you know if the unspecified board will work well with a 2500k? Your gonna need good cooling with the 2500k if you plan on overclocking.

I bet if you weighed it up, it would cost more to buy the pre built and change parts. With a custom build, you know what parts your getting, and it usually works out cheaper...no middle man charges.

Welcome to OCN!

I wouldn't recommend pre-made computer. Upgrade will be very limited and you'll eventually have to upgrade them and end up spending more money.

I plan on buying Corsair H50 Cooling. I did a little poking around, and the 2300 and 2500k are both on LGA1155, so it should be fine. If you click this link, it'll take you to the page for the PC. I asked because it would take me ages to save up either of those amounts of money. Thanks for the advice!

ah right, i see. Well Z13 my honest advice is that if its going to take you ages to save up, the last thing youd want is to end up with a poor overclock due to the quality of the ram/mobo that comes with the prebuilt.

9/10 its better to buy custom build.
