Side job building and selling PCs on ebay.. - Page 2

You're dreaming if you think you can sell one for more than cost. Also the buyer has 45 days to return it for a full refund. It's a no go as others said.

Thread Starter
I sell legit copies of windows 7 home, $109 a pop, and they also get that CD and serial. I've sold my gaming rigs on eBay before and broke even, I was just wondering if there were any other ways of possibly saving money in this endeavor. It doesn't seem like it's a good idea since it's hard to make a substantial profit, but I may give CL a chance.
Honestly not worth it. Better to build a cheaper budget rig and then price it high enough that you get a profit, but not to high to scam people.

You will make more money selling indiviual parts, the OS, everything seperate bassically.

No.... with $20 profit margin, you will be giving away money to ebay. I personally wouldn't deal with ebay and wish someone has enough money to found an ebay killer because ebay right now is a monopoly. I can't tell you how upset I am about the iphone 4 that I just sold on that stupid website. They literally took $100 from me.

I sell PCs locally and I put the prices of all the hardware out in the open and charge a $100 (basic)-$175 (SLI/Xfire/WaterCooling) assembly/installation fee. I also throw in 1 house call at 6 months for free and offer other house calls @ $75/call. I will never sell anything on eBay because all it will take is that one buyer who disputes the transaction and you are screwed from there on out. eBay and PayPal will ALWAYS side with the buyer.

I do the same thing, minus the free house call lol. I do offer troubleshooting but its usually I pick up the PC and work on it at my house.

I advertise on craigslist for PC building, virus removal, PC repair, and home networking. I also advertise in my apartment complex's monthly news paper thing. I showed my sig rig to the leasing manager and she was amazed by all the red lights and tells people that I build monster machines lol.

Ive been doing it for about 3 months now, have built 7 PC so far for at $100 fee for assembly of each.

I also got hired by a guy to network his house, ran cat5 to 3 bedrooms installed jacks and everything, guy paid me $800 for 3 hours worth of work.

Move the business outside of eBay and it could be much more viable.

Make your own website. Host it for very few $s per year. Lets face it, sell one or two locally and it'll pay for the site.

That's the avenue I'd be exploring.

I did something similar with bikes. Bought old frames (mostly old racing bikes) and made them single speed, cleaned them, spray painted them, sold them locally. Usually cost me $75-$100 for the parts. Sold for $500. It's hard to say how much time it took as I'd usually be working on more than one at a time. Perhaps 4-5 hours per bike. Advertised in the local free-ads. The real thing working in my favour was the local recycling center / dump. A set of wheels that only needed truing and a little TLC would be $4. $10 for a frame, usually c/w handlebars, stem and a few other usable bits. If you can build low-end PCs from salvaged parts you could do much better. Lower priced but much, much cheaper to build.
