Lots of Travlin'

Hey everyone. I will be traveling like mad summer. At least 4 plane trips; Standford, Texas, etc. So with the 30+ hours of flight at the month I will be spending AFK at Stanford I was thinking, hell perfect time to get a tablet? I have a laptop, which I would take, but it is a 2007 MBP that can hardly play HD video content, plus super heavy. So what do you guys think? No price range here, looking more for practical use. Don't need 3G, have a Moto Atrix 4G with wifi tethering.

EDIT:

I saw there should be some new Tabs coming out soon, the HTC Puccini, Galaxy Tab 10.1. Anyone have info on these? Release dates? Bootloaders? Anything? I couldn't find much but these, especially the Puccini look better then the transformer with a 1.5Ghz dual core processor, and HTCs promise to never lock the boot loader.

I will be leaving July 5th, so got to have it before then.

Ok. Good question. I'm going to be a little bias here towards apple. But I have used the other tablets and they just don't do it for me.

I see you already use a mac. Well even simpler to get an iPad then. Easy syncing and setup etc etc.

But here's my real argument towards an iPad over an android tablet. The iPad is simple and easy to use, does web browsing, has the biggest app eco system, quick and the battery life is intense. I left it on sleep for 2 weeks. Came back and still had over 60% of the battery left. Real use it drops down. But it's still a good 5 hours +. The next best thing is you know it will always be able to get the latest updates compared to android tablets. They may not get them due to the fragmention of the market. In other words the iPad is the safer bet.

I love mine. I mainly use mine for books, music and games. Don't really do any media watching or streaming so I can't help you there. The only thing that would put me off one is how often a new one comes out. Then again the android tablets come out just as often is not more.

TLDR
Get an iPad!

The only problem with iPad and Android tab is their inability to playback 720p MKV without first needing to convert them to another format. If you need PC power. Take a look at the ASUS EP121, 12'1" i5 Win7. If you can live with Netbook power. Look at the Acer Iconia W500 AMD C-50 fusion w/ATI 6250 (actually much more powerful than Netbook). Both can handle 1080p mkv playback, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video 720p HD with ease.

^ Erm, Android can play MKV files just fine, it's just the hardware may not be able to handle 1080p content. But 720p works fine on even a previous-gen HTC Desire HD like mine so I'd bet a Tegra 2 device could handle full 1080p videos.

Have the OP download Rock Player or MoboPlayer, and watch any Android device play even MKV files with embedded subtitles and audio tracks.

Don't forget with the iPad you can jailbreak it and do just about anything you wish. If it only works on an android tablet. Chances are it's able to run on the iPad through a jailbreak.

This would include mkv files, I'm sure an iPad app makes them playable.

My Moto Atrix can handle 1080p videos...

Also I am stuck at a crossroads here. I LOVE android, the hacking, modding, have tons of apps for it (I have a lot for apple too), etc. But I also would like to be able to catch on some netflix in the mean time. While I am relaxing in my dorm, NETFLIX BABY! But that is about the only thing the iPad has over an android tab, like the eee transformer.

True, true. But frankly jailbreaking process is still a bit crude in the iPad 2 (working Cydia was just released) while Android doesn't require root to gain extended codec functionality.

I had the chance to play with a Acer Iconia A500 (same spec as Xoom, ASUS Tranformer) for a few days and I have tried everything (rockplayer and a few others) and none of them can handle 720p mkv playback. I have also search high and low on most iPad forum and so far there is no way to playback a 720p mkv (jailbroken or not) without converting. All you need to do is Google (720p mkv playback onXoom or iPad) and all you see if conversion software.

The iPad is a bit annoying to jailbreak but if you need it, it's there. The thing the iPad has over most of the other tablets is battery life and speed. I don't know about android tablets but they seem to lag. They have a nice UI that I like but something about them seems slow. Also iPad or iPhone for that matter has a slick music interface. And if you actually buy your songs from iTunes it just makes more sense to get an iPad.

Sorry there is a lot of bias. I just love mine to much

Actually, it can't, It play a 1080p or 720p media file at lower res (960 x 540) or a HTC Desire HD's 800x480 (basically DVD res) which require much less power than playing back at native res on a highres display. It's like reducing the resolution on games to get better performance from a older graphics card.
