Considering a GTX 570 or 580

Thread Starter
I am contemplating doing a new build, and really want to switch back to Nvidia after bad luck with ATI. I have a couple questions before I choose my GPU though.

I am looking to keep this cheap, but I also want it to last and get a pretty good bang for my buck. The 570 is quite cheaper compared to the $500 price tag on a 580. I haven't found too many benchmarks, but one I saw on Far Cry 2, there was a 20fps difference at my monitor resolution. Am I going to have a big difference between the 570 and 580?

Without tax, my rig is lookin to be in the lower $1300 range. I could shave quite a bit off just going with a 570 anyway, but when are the new 6 series cards coming out? I am basically wondering if there is a price drop to be expected in the near future.

I only run a single 22inch monitor at 1680X1050, but have contemplated SLI. I do not entirely plan on adding a second monitor, and if I do I doubt it would be another 22. Would SLI even make a difference for me if I kept the single monitor setup? I doubt it would be worth the money, especially with 580s.

Most of the games I play now are flightsims (FSX or DCS A-10), ARMA2 (looking to getting A3 next year), and should be getting BF3 later this year. My computer can play everything I have alright right now, but it is sketchy sometimes and I would rather have something that I know will play the games with at least 30 frames.

Just buy cheaper card that will be better for your resolution... get your use out of that card while saving up a couple thousand bucks and then upgrade to a well balanced setup and a new monitor. that's what I would do and I think that's the best choice. Plus it's best to have a well balanced system and your CPU would give bottlenecks unless you overclocked I would say in some cases. Grab the best price/performance such as 460, 560, 6850.

Im building a whole new computer. I didn't list out the details, but I think I probably should, just in case I missed something.

MOBO
i7-2600k @ 3.4Ghz
Corsair DDR3 1600 ram, 8gb
Corsair 750w single rail
AC Freezer Pro cooling

Nothing is for sure decided on yet. More so a dream build right now until I decided I want to pour money into this.

So overall there wont be a difference for me at my resolution between the 580 and 570?

That would be a ver nice rig, too much for a 1680 IMO, you should get at least 1920x1080, even at 1920x1080, the GTX570 its good enough, but if you got the money, why not the GTX580?!?!?!?

If your gaming then get the 2500k instead, the HT on the 2600k doesn't make no dfference in gaming.

The asrock extreme4 is an excellent bang for buck mobo, if you have a little more $$ to spend on the mobo I would recommend the asus P8P67 Pro or the Gigabyte p67 ud4.

4GB of RAM is enough for gaming.

For the cpu cooler I would recommend the Coolermaster 212+, it's an exceptional cooler with a fantastic price tag. Again if you have a little more $$ I would recommend th eSilver arrow or the Noctua DH-14.

As for the graphics card, at 1680*1050 as 560ti would fit the bill very well and perform very good at that res.

Gaming entirely. I play Flightsims (FSX and DCS A-10), Arma 2 (getting Arma3 next year), and hopefully BF3 later this year.

I would consider a new monitor, but I don't know. I would be pretty cheap about it though. If I got a GTX580 and a 24inch monitor my pockets would be hitting the limit I think. I have the money for the 580, but again this boils down to if I need it and if I really want to pay for it. I have other stuff to put money into, but its mostly food, luxuries, and a new truck. Even this computer puts a big dent in buying a new (used) vehicle.

This is why I came here to ask the questions though. I obviously have no idea what I really need. People say the 570, and some say the 560 even. What I don't understand, is how much of a performance impact am I going to notice in a game like Arma2 when comparing the 560,570, and 580. All the games I play have moments where they can bog down to under 20 frames, and I want to avoid getting below 30 at all costs (of course pending the situation). I think the CPU, especially after its overclocked will probably do most of the work though. I only know the rough basics to putting a computer together, I do not fully understand why everything needs to go together, and what is going to do most of my work.

Check above reply.

EDIT: Even if you plan on upgrading your monitor to a 1920*1080 res a 560 ti would still be very good, maybe then you could think about adding a second 560ti. SLI 560ti is beastly and should have no problems maxing games at 1080p (should be good enough to around 4X AA 1080p maxed out)

I see!
If you are OK at 1680, the GTX570 wouldn't let you go below 30fps in pretty much any actual game maxed out, even crysis!
I think the GTX580 its way overkill for a 1680 res!! If you aren't willing to upgrade your monitor soon, I would say go for the GTX 570.
