Well that doesn't necessarily rule out Creative, then. A lot of people prefer Asus over Creative for music, but I personally don't. You could go high-end right away, which means for Creative, you have the X-Fi Titanium HD, or for Asus, you have the Xonar ST/STX.

I have experience with the Titanium HD, obviously , but it's nice that it has different modes for 'Audio Creation Mode', 'Game Mode', and 'Entertainment Mode'. Without tweaking, each of these are very geared towards their respected purposes. As for headphones, I'm not sure what good headphones are for Videos/Movies/TV, but I do like my JVC HA-RX700s for that. I tend to use them primarily for anything except music.

I've recently heard about the Ear Force PX5 headphones, and from what I've heard they are amazing. Any thoughts on them?

Those are Turtle Beaches, from what the audiophiles here have told me they are over priced, and basically junk. Check this thread out

I checked it out, but it doesn't really talk about headphones that are great for blocking out external noise... at least not that I could tell

The only problem with those is they are open, and I need them closed to block out all the noise that will be around me

These seem pretty promising:

http://www.zzounds.com/item--DSDEX29

See if you can look around on the web and find opinions on them. They have a great rating on zZounds and boast being "the only headphones on the planet that have dynamic closed back speakers within a closed back isolation chamber."

Good luck, OP.

Thanks, a lot of the reviews I'm reading seem to point to poor construction, and that the cans snap off after limited use...

Don't get anything that is labeled "gaming" or something similar. Let me link you to this site which will give you much better information.

Headphone List

A couple great options around your budget are:

http://www.buy.com/prod/denon-ah-d20...206928680.html
http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser...dphones_504633

Or honestly anything else on that list that is within your price range. There are a ton of great reviews on that site from people who have invested thousands of dollars, uncountable hours, and a lot of research into their audio. You can get a truly amazing sounding pair of cans for $300 provided they aren't Beats by Dre I would invest as much money as your budget allows to the Headphones and wait on the DAC. Also, many of those headphones will benefit from amplification, but it is not always necessary. I would say anything with an impedance over 80-100ohm should have some sort of stand alone amplifier.

Every Headphone will have it's own sound signature and you will need to look for the one that will best suit the music you listen to most.
If you are looking to just get a set of cans for gaming, then just get a $50-$100 pair of headphones and call it good. But if you want to experience your music in a way that 95% have never experienced, keep doing your research and purchase something that you will never regret. Of course playing game audio through one of the headphones I have listed certainly won't sound "bad". I am sure it will sound better than any "gaming" labeled headphone etc.
