The op would need a headphone amp for both 600ohm beyers and the AKG k701,a Xonar STX would bearly handle the beyers while it would do a good job with the AKGs K701's on high gain.

But both would do there best plugged into a standalone amp like a Fiio E9 or Matrix M amp.Tho the op can always use something like a X-Fi HD or whatever as a Dac/preamp and plug either amps thru the RCA outs or line outs on which ever card.

Other wise he can get something thats easy driven on a Xonar DG's HP Amp.

Beyers are easier to drive than AKGs.

Just get these : http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cg...source=froogle

And be sure to use the instant discount code that will knock off 60 bucks to make it 109 shipped.

Closed headphones, balanced sound all around, with fantastic bass for gamers, and because of a recent price hike everyone now sells them for 160+. So they're a fantastic deal at 109. Though be sure to choose between the straight cable or curled cable version of the headphones as the M50S/M50 have ten foot cables. I linked curled version like mine >.>;

Then get either a Creative Titanium HD or a nice Asus Xonar STX and you're good.

PS they also sell replacement pads for em for 16 bucks a pair if you're rough with your gear.

*edit* The instant rebate expires on the first of June so after that back to 170 . Google ATH-M50 for tons of info on 'em

From what I'm reading these sound perfect. As someone who owns them, what are your thoughts on how well the cancel out any outside noise?

I've been reading a lot of reviews and am thinking about settling on the ATH-A900s.
Only concerns I have are how well they do for gaming, and how well they cancel out outside noise. Any input from someone that has them/ has used them would be greatly appreciated

They perform weaker than AD700s when it comes to soundstage, but the noise isolation is excellent on them. They also have substantially increased bass compared to AD700s.

Would getting a soundcard help out with the soundstage any? Or at least noticeably?

onboard sound will give a constant almost inaudible flutter to a quality headphone. Onboard sound components are NOT shielded, so they pick up all of the electrical noise from your motherboard and case accessories.

I have recently tested the new motherboard I have and its onboard sound versus my X-Meridian 2G. I have to increase the volume of the Realtek onboard to 100% to get the same listening level as the X-Meridian at 55%. Turning up the Realtek that loud gives audible distortion and hiss during playback.

Onboard sound sucks. I do not care if it is free. Nothing good is ever free.

Have any good ideas for a decent soundcard? I have a 5.1 surround speaker setup and ordered the ATH A900s. It will be used mostly for gaming and I really don't want to go above $100. Oh and I'm not really sure of anything about souncards, do they pretty much fit in every mobo or does the mobo matter?

The best at your budget would be the Xonar DX at around $90 (though you can almost definitely find it cheaper with rebates or whatnot). It supports surround, has great drivers, and gives great sound. The DX fits into any PCI-E slot (including those tiny x1 slots you probably don't use), but if you want the D1 is the exact same card but with a regular PCI interface.
