So what your claiming is an unlocked and over clocked 6950 will equal an over clocked 6970? I don't own them but I highly doubt the unlocked 6950 can exceed the over clock to get it to a performance of an over clocked 6970.

Yes, easily. 6950's on average clock better than 6970s... tbh 6970s clock like crap. The fact that you say 6970s clock better shows... well you know what I mean?

Wonder why the 6970 can't over clock as well. I was under the assumption the shaders were of higher quality opposed to the disabled shaders of the 6950? Do you know why the 6970 wasn't made to over clock as well? You'd think the over clock of the 6900 series would be at least proportional if not better?

EDIT: Thank you also for keeping it civil and refraining from finishing that sentence.

I don't know why. It really sucks for 6970s owners when they can't even max catalyst defaults much less push the envelope a wee bit. On the other hand a lot of 6950s flashed to 6970, not only hit 6970 defaults but can max them with ease.

Unfortunately, AMD isn't selling the initial reference (volterra) pcb anymore and stock has pretty much shriveled up.

First of all i hope i won't make a mistake by bumping this thread as my question is a bit different, but i used it to pick the 'right' 6950 card xD.

So, right now im running 2 4890 1gb in crossfire, a 2 y old system or smth. I'm in a big dilemma right now as i'm eagerly awaiting Skyrim, and i rly wanna 'max out' that game or atleast be 'close to max it out'.(specs in the sig, getting a Corsair hydro h 100 next week so i can overclock the cpu a bit aswell). Anyway, i can get here from a local dealer this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127575 for 280 eur. Should i pull the trigger on this card and later in about 6 months or smth add another one, or should i stay with 2x 4890 for a while and change later?

Thanks in advance for any answers

So i should ditch the 2 4890? A single 6950 performs much better?

What is it Arizonian calls this ... Necrobumping ? bumping a dead thread I guess ?

Anyways, Yeah the MSI PE/OC TwinFrozrIII is an EXTREMELY GOOD CARD and one of the BEST HD-6950's. Here's a great thread on the card - http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/107...win-frozr.html

Another Option would be the Sapphire TOXIC, a GREAT CARD and one of, if not THE, BEST HD-6950's, it IS the FASTest 6950 out of the Box. Here's a great thread on the card - SAPPhIRE TOXIC HD-6950 Club

There are a couple others worth consideration, and I list them here ... http://www.overclock.net/amd-ati/114...l#post15398858 ...
the Sapphire DIRT3 edition, PowerColor #AX6950 2GBD5-P22DHG or #AX6950 2GBD5-P22DH ++PCS editions, Asus EAH6950 DCUII/2DI4S/2GD5 edition, and the HIS 6950 IceQ X Turbo X 2GB H695QNX2G2M. Obviously a REFERENCE card, but you're HIGHLY unlikely to find a new one of those around, but if you're willing to buy used, you migh find a deal ?

Good Luck and don't necrobump anymore

Do they support DX11 ? you say you want to play newer High end gaming like Skyrim, etc. and maxed out ... then ...

Well i allways thought its better to bump a thread which has a similar 'discussion' than making a new one with nearly the 'same' question.

Edit. ok so i'll pick the msi and try to add another one as soon as possible.

Thanks for the fast replies guyz, rly appreaciate it =)
