So all the cables that I had to build from scratch are now complete. I was able to get the drill bits I needed to finish up the Slim DVD tray. As stated previously, i removed the lonely USB port and put in a purple LED cluster... looks a tad goofy, but my daughters are gonna wig out about it:

Here is a complete photo of the wiring. Like the two fans, i wired these two lights together (front cluster and purple LED stick) to be able to use only 1 4 pin power connector... the less wiring, the better.

just for giggles, i plugged the 4 pin into my current rig to test out the wiring... all LED's functional, wife and child approved.

The only item i have left to sleeve is my cpu cooler fan cable, which I will do during assembly. I am closing in on completion, faster than I initially figured.

I placed an order today with newegg for a Lite On slim profile Slot-loading dvd burner and a Western Digital 7200 RPM Scorpio Black 320GB laptop HDD. I am going to take the Crucial 128GB SSD that I am currently using on my rig and install it in the Mini Machine as well. This serves two purposes - one immediate and one long term. 1.) since I will be using the mini machine while working on my own custom rig, I want something that actually can load windows and office quickly 2.) giving my daughters 448GB HD space should keep them satisfied for a while, long after I have upgraded the board, cpu, and ram for the mini machine.

all I have left to do is decide what mobo I want to use. I am working on investigating a Zotac Mini ITX 890GX with a PCI Express X 16 slot, but am encountering some resisitance... see the thread below:

http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...where-buy.html

Basically every other Mini ITX board has given me fits, whether it be a missing feature I am looking for or the necessity for new ram, cpu, cooler, etc. I am trying to strike a comprise between cost and performance/expandability. Maybe I will nix the idea of having a PCI Express X 16 slot, the chances of them needing it might be slim. who knows, maybe in 5 years it will take a 6990 or more just to run flash web games.

more to come soon, thanks again.

quick update - sorry for the lack of pics this time, but not a ton to report... i did get a recent package in the mail, containing the two goodies:

slim dvd burner

320 GB HDD

so basically now i am just waiting for the rest of the components before i jack the 128 GB SSD from my current rig and slap it in this one. I am going to have to make one mod though... when I lined up the mouting holes for the slim dvd burner, i saw a small gap beneath the right front face which would let some purple light leak thru. I am going to have to widen the mounting bracket just a tad so it can lay a little more flush.

so as far as the remaining components, i am settled on the following:

CPU

Memory

Mobo

... I am just waiting for a little more assurance with my job situation before i drop the cash on these last items. end of the fiscal year means Microsoft cleans out a lot of their contractors.

did get one piece of good news, a buddy from work is going to give me his old GPU... FREE. it is an Nvidia 275 GTX, not bad for a gimme. I am planning on taking off the fan housing and giving it a "purple touch". I wasnt sure I was going to add a GPU, but i figured if i dont have time/cash to build my next rig for a while, at least I can game a bit on the mini machine.

i could still use one bit of good luck - I was planning on re-using my Cooler Master Geminii from my current machine, but I dont have the 1155 mounting bracket... need to see if I can scope out a freebie so I dont have to buy the entire cooler.

i will be back with pics by the weekend.

I have been stalking a lot of the sparkle GPU's, the only issue is that the fan will face downward in the case where you wont see it thru the window.

Weekend Update as Promised...

So as mentioned previously, I received this graphics card from a pal at work for free:

but it was filthy dirty and those colors just aren't going to cut it, so I had to open er up. naturally, it was full of dust, lint, and apparently some pretty thick thermal pads on the ram... approximately 3mm thick, which I am having difficulty locating for replacements:

at least I have made it through the mods of the housing/fan and they match the overall theme pretty well, take a look:

now I am just working on how to restore this card to its previously glory. I bought some AS 5 for the GPU and some clear thermal grease for the memory and other components... but I dunno what I am gonna do about finding some thick thermal pad... suggestions apprecaited

also, since I now have a GPU, I had to put together a GPU cable. it was a bit of a chore since the stock Seasonic cable is a dual 6+2... so I cut out the extra wires, re-sleeved, and added some heatshrink for a clean look:

My motherboard, CPU, CPU cooler, and ram will be here on Monday so I am closing in on finishing. I am still trying to locate a waterjet cutter in the Seattle area to get my custom side panel made. a buddy from work helped out with the autocad and the design is complete, but I am saving that for the grand finale.

assembly next week... if I can get this thermal pad issue resolved.

thanks for looking

Looking good, and as for the thermal pads, you could try and stick two together to get the required thickness.
