AMD 955 stock cooler and clock

Thread Starter

stressed (stopped after 10 minutes) and did see a 72c

Motherboard default values has had this cpu at 1.42 or so volts but have set it to 1.25x and these are the temps I get. There is no dust on the heatsink and already applied AS5. What the hell is going on?

EDIT: temps have ALWAYS been high since I can ever remember with this cpu.

Did the stock cooler come pre-applied with a thermal compound? If you have some extra lying around, I would pull the HSF, wipe it VERY clean. Then re-apply. Once you re-seat, you will hopefully have at least a few degrees Celsius drop. The thermal compound that comes pre-applied is generally silicon-based, which generally performs far poorer than the metal-based types (like Arctic Silver 5).

Another thing, is your CPU lapped? In that case, you probably don't have the stock thermal compound applied. You probably applied it yourself. Maybe you need to re-apply it, using less than you did before. This is because a lapped CPU requires less thermal compound (being that there are less gaps/crevices/etc. between the heatsink and CPU surface).

edit: Sorry! I am a bad reader! Hah. Just re-read your post and saw you said you already applied AS5.

Just for experimentation's sake, have you tried turning on Cool'n'Quiet?

Probably bad seat.
For motherboard VRM limitations you should remain on the stock cooler... an aftermarket heatsink may solve your CPU heat problem further, but removing VRM cooling will instantly make the chances of your board catastrophically failing go up.

Turned CnQ to auto and enabled and same thing. I'm noticing that my cpu fan isn't spining faster when the temps rise. Hmm

72C! If I am not mistaken, the damaging point for the 955 is 60C, and most people suggest limiting it to 55C. So be careful of stressing your CPU to those temps until you find out the problem.

Do you have any programs such as Speedfan or programs that came with your mobo that may be causing the fan to not speed up?
I had 955 OCed at stock cooler and it had temps of up to 61
My 920 when OCed had temps of up to 64 no problems

The point which u need to be carefull is when temps are dangerously reaching 69-70 as this is the max temp specified by AMD. This is also what CoreTemp shows
