Ubuntu 11.04

Thread Starter
I'm a big fan of Ubuntu, but sadly haven't found a good reason to have it installed for quite a while. I do 3D work in Cinema 4D R12 and some light gaming (primarily Oblivion, Rift, and brief spats with other games).

How is 11.04 looking for compatibility... same boat as it's predecessors? Would be a happy camper if I could run Photoshop CS5 x64, Cinema 4D R12, and Rift without a hitch.

On a sidenote, any news on DX11 in Linux? I saw some news awhile back about a fellow developing a .dll to cleanly integrate DX11 into Linux but haven't heard anything since. Mesa project or somesuch.

Umm...compatibility? You mean whether the developers at Adobe or other for profit corporations have ported code over? Doubtful. It's pretty much up to you using WINE to get Photoshop or gaming to work.

And why would we need DX11 in Linux? We had tessalation before windows did with openGL. I'm not sure why it would be needed.

Also, Ubuntu doesn't equal Linux as the only option. There are other distros and other variants better than Ubuntu.

Hi and thanks for the responses.

Rookie, no need to be offensive.

I am well aware Ubuntu is not the only OS that utilizes the Linux kernel. But if you read the thread title, youll note that this thread is about Ubuntu, not thr other 274648283 distros out there. wink.gif

And as for compatibility, again please read my post. I cited several precise examples of programs. I realize commercial corporations arent likely to port code to an open source OS, but there are options like WINE. Dont assume everyone is a moron please.

As for DX11... while openGL is more powerful in native openGL games, and for 3# modeling software, most modern games utilize DX11. While WINE can sometimes translate DX to OpenGL, it effectively cuts FPS in half and often renders certain features improperly.

Could anyone else more acutely answer my question?

PS. And as for "there are other variants better than Ubuntu," that's a completely subjective opinion. 'nix strength is that each OS caters to precise needs. Were not talking Windows vs Mac here... there is no "best" Linux.

Sorry. Wasn't trying to be offensive as it was just being short. redface.gif

WINE is your only option outside of VMs for windows programs that do not have Linux builds. I just assumed that was commonly understood.

Again...DX11 is not needed or appreciated as far as Linux devs are concerned and therefore it would be up to you to get it working. They don't want to have to use something that MS owns.
