Good headset+soundcard under $250AUS

Thread Starter
MUST have a mic.
Ideally open backed.
Must have a big soundstage.
MUST be within budget.

50% music / 50% gaming

I listen to all sorts of rock/metal/symphonic metal
I play everything from WoW to Counter-strike

I have looked at the Sennhieser PC360 and PC350 but they are VERY pricey, especially when you factor in a separate soundcard.
Are the sound quality on the Razer Carcharis any good?

Recommend away!

I wouldn't recommend any "gaming" headsets. Instead get a good set of headphones and get a cheap clip-on mic like the Zalman ZM-1 mic if you can find it there. There are others more qualified than me to recommend headphones, but I will recommend the JVC RX700s/RX900s if you can find them there. I have the RX900s and use them for gaming and music, and I really like them. They are semi-open. They're not totally open backed, but they're not totally closed either. A good set of totally open headphones that a lot of people recommend are the Audio Technica ATH-AD700s, although I personally haven't used them.

good oints said above
All people mere would say to get headphones and then get clip-mic
As for the headphones theAD700 are fantastic (95$USD)
As for tne sound card the Xonar DX is highly recommended although its bad only in BC2
so if you have intrest in this particular game i would say to get the Creative X-Fi titanium , those cards are about 90~100$ us
More money to spend get the Creative titanium hd 160$ us

Hope that helped

thanks for all the replies but...

NO CLIP ON MIC

AT ALL

they introduce way to much background noise, and voice quality is a big priority for me.

Also the PC350 is basically a HD595 with a mic....

If you're deadset against a clip on mic, I won't try and convince you otherwise, but I use one and people have had no trouble hearing me online.

still looking for a solution.

Tested the zalman clip on mic, it was picking up way too much background noise, with a lot of static. I could clearly hear the tv on the other side of the house. you also had to lean in to it for it to pick up your voice clearly.

the way I see it is..

1. crappy headphones + good mic (most gaming headphones)
2. Sennheiser pc 360/350, or Beyerdynamic headset (VERY overpriced)
3. good headphones + crap mic (Audiophile headphones with a clip on mic)

Same drivers, but not really. Sounds worse and is less comfortable (IMO).

You may not like the Zalman, but it's not the only mic out there. I use a Logitech USB desk microphone for gaming. It's just as good as any headset mic, it has noise-canceling, and even a mute feature (which is why I went USB).

Really, nobody who frequents here if going to recommend a gaming headset. They're just not good for the money they're worth.
