recommend a cooler for my i7 950

i've been trying to overclock my 950 for a while now, i'm not a crazy overclocker, and to be honest i don't desperately need high clocks for doing what i do at the moment, but a little extra speed never hurts! also, the thought of not being able to run at 4ghz annoys me a bit, as not a lot of 9x0 chips fail to do so. well, i am able to get to 4ghz, but temps are way too high, with ht on it hits mid 80s during max ibt test, i believe that's not a nice temp to sit on for 24/7.

i'm starting to believe that my frio isn't really up for the task, so i would like some suggestions on a replacement. i know a lot of people will suggest me nh-d14, but i really don't like the look of it. no offence to nh-d14 owners, i guess it's just a personal thing

any input will be appreciated, thanks in advance

If you want to venture into water cooling you can get an XSPC Rasa RS240 kit. It comes with everything you need for a CPU loop and only costs $130. If you get a NH-D14 or Silver Arrow, neither will clear your current ram so both are out of the question for you. You could get a Thermalright Venomous X and it would fit with your ram.

Venomous X
H70 or wait for H80/ H100
XSPC Rasa RS240

Depending on which fans you put on the Venomous X , it can become an extremly good heatsink, same for the H70. The Rasa kit cost more but totally worth it !!

i am aware of the xspc rasa kit, but i think the rx120 would probably be a better fit for my case, as the 240 rad would need some modding work i think...

also, the rasa kit comes with a 5.25'' bay res/pump combo right? the thing with the weird orientation of my fortress 2 case is that the graphics card would be in between the bay area and the cpu, which means the tubes will be going across the gpu. i have no knowledge whatsoever with water cooling, but can't help wondering how much will the gpu heat up the fluid? also, the gainward 570 glh i am getting doesn't have a reference cooler which will probably make things worse no?

is the h60 any good compared to h70? i remember seeing a review saying that the h60 is only a couple of degrees shy of the h70 with push/pull?

h80 looks like the baby of h60 and h70, have to say i like the square block unit on the h60 more than the round one on the h70. any idea when the h80 will launch?

the venomous x looks interesting, if i'm getting it, will for sure slap 2 fans on it, but what fans would you recommend with it?

80c in Intel Burn Test @ 4.0 is not as bad as it seems...

What temps do you see in Prime95 Blend?

I hit 79c in Prime95 at my current OC even with H2o

i haven't actually done any runs in prime95, i heard ibt generates more heat so i went with ibt and it takes somewhat shorter time to find cpu instability, or am i talking complete crap here? lol

anyways, i guess ibt and prime95 are extreme cases, im sure during normal use or even gaming, you're not getting temps anywhere near 79 right? for me 4ghz idle temps hover around 45, sometimes even 50, which i think it's a little on the hot side...

also, seeing you have a xspc kit, what do you think of it?

IBT puts extreme stress on your system, you will never see those temps. Nothing against the program, its great for stability.

I do video encoding and use a program that will push all 8 threads to 100% and still dont see temps past the mid 60's. The only way I cant get it to 70c in a real world situation is folding. And even then I run -smp 6 and keep temps below 70c. -smp 8 will put me around 75c. IBT pushes me to 85c pretty quick.

Prime95 will push it higher then anything your going to be doing, gaming/encoding/multi tasking etc.

ok, quick question regarding a xspc kit, would 1 rx120 rad be enough for cpu only?

also, do you think the gpu will heat up the loop significantly? take a look at a quick sketch of my system layout, a bit crappy, but im sure you'll get it
post #10 of 11
Get at least a RX240 setup minimum... And the gpu should not affect your setup (as long as you mean the temp of the gpu and not adding the gpu in the loop).
I took my rad from outside my case and mounted it inside at the top and pull the air from outside and the temps were no different.

Just be sure to have the cool air coming from outside the case through the rad. If you pull it from inside your case through the rad it will be blowing warm air through it....
