SSD External Hard Drives?

Are there any SSD external hard drives available? How long before manufacturers develop SSD external drives? If there is already an SSD external drive available, what is the brand? Thanks.

You can buy an external SATA enclosure and put a normal internal SSD inside one.

plus an SSD would be pretty quick I imagine, you'd just have to get an external enclosure with USB 3.0 or e-sata and an SSD and be good to go.

IIRC some of the OCZ SSDs have USB built in. Only USB2.0 though.

What do you need it for? Speed? Or just ruggedness?

Thanks for the link, Wow its pretty expensive.

Seems like the USB (at least 2.0) would bottleneck into not worth having it. It would be good for someone who tosses/drops the enclosure all the time.

I would imagine to get any gains, one would need an eSata adapter or USB 3, but I don't know the speeds on those off hand.

I agree with the external case idea. Any external SSD won't be as good of a deal as a SSD and a case. You can get the external cases with SATA ports or USB or both.

Keep in mind, unless you've got external SATA ports, or USB 3.0, USB 2.0 will bottleneck the hell out of it. Can't find it off the top of my head, but there was a thread recently where someone connected their new SSD via USB 2.0 and ran hdtune, and the speeds were pretty much pegged at 35MB/s. At which point you might as well just buy a newer USB thumb drive and use that.
