What ram should I buy?

Thread Starter
I am looking to do a little updating for my system. I am planning on running some FEA program on my computer and I'd like to purchase more ram as well as a larger hdd. I'm not entirely sure what brand, speed, or amount I should be looking for. I know I want at least 8GB more but I'd like to get some that use less energy while maintaining a similar if not better performance.

For the HDD I am not sure what I want, I just might buy an external 1TB drive from newegg and call it a day. They have one for sale for $50.00 dollars so I might just get that.

My budget for the ram is at least $250.00. I appreciate any help or advice anyone can offer.

Carlos

Get the cheapest 800mhz ram you can basically, the timings really don't make a noticable difference, speeds over 800 also not really important in real world apps.

Why not just buy the same set as the ones in your sig? They seem pretty decent? And for the HDD Samsung F3 1TB? they are decent.

Are you talking about DDR2 or DDR3? His sig rig uses DDR3. Depending on what he does, it can make a difference

Santorican are you planning a further expansion to 16GB RAM? If you want low power, perhaps get some 2 2x4GB kits of G.Skill ECOs, though RAM power consumption usually doesn't make a huge difference with voltage on DDR3

I'm not sure I understand your question fully. Are you asking after I get 16GB am I going to get more ram? If that is what you're asking then more than likely no I will not.

If ram power consumption doesn't make a big difference then do you have another recommendation without power consumption in mind?

No I mean are you looking to go from your current 8GB to 16GB? Is your 8GB G.Skill ECO series 4x2GB or 2x4GB, if the former you need to buy all new because you filled your RAM slots. if the latter, you should get the same RAM.

It is 4 2GB sticks so I'd have to buy all new ram.
