Shall I upgrade from my XIGMATEK Thor's Hammer?

Thread Starter
I have been using this cooler for about 8 months on my 955be cpu OCed to 3.6GHz. I want to use 3.8-4GHz oc now. But i dont think that the mighty Thor is sufficient for that, specially in this hot ( verrry verrry hot) Indian climate. From the limited number of benchmarks on this rare cooler I found internet, it appears that it is almost similar to the NHD14s ( a few degrees worse than nhd14). So I guess I want to know from someone who has used this cooler before, shall I move on and sell my Thor for something better? If so then how much improvement will this move bring?
I want to go water cooling but from a desperate attempt I made last night made me aware of a terrifying fact. It would cost me almost 200$ in shipping to get a 150$ RASA240 kit from frozencpu . I cant afford that shipping cost (actually no one in their right mind would). Anyway, the closest I can get to a rasa is to buy a corsair H70. That costs too damn much here and I want to make sure that its a right buy before I make my move. So, please help me make a decision.

You could go for that or wait for the h100. But the h70 will be a nice upgrade for you, you won't be disappointed. Have you tried seeing if it would be cheaper to get the rasa kit from svc.com or jab-tech.com?

Well-if your considering the h70-you might want to take a look at the Antec 620-it is a great cooler and costs 69.99 f/s from antec-it comes with one fan add another and it will match or beat the h70, plus better hoses, warrenty and newer cold plate-but if you want a bit more-the antec 920 at 119.99 f/s is better.

I have not tried svc or jab-tech yet, but I will. Thanks for the suggestion. I doubt it if they will ship their products here, hardly any reputable organization does. Thats why I was so excited when I saw my country located in the FrozenCpu shipping list. Anyway, what temps are you getting with your H70 at your OC?

I am running my 955BE at: 3.89GHz vcore 1.43v (at full load including llc correction)
Idle temp: 41c Load temp (prime blend for 1 hour): 70c top
I am running my Thor with two fans in push-pull. The push fan being a 1800rpm coolermaster and the pull being a very old 1200rpm coolermaster. I have used them in reverse orientation (so the pull fan is more powerful) but no change in temps.

Is 70c too much for my am3 cpu? at what temp the cpu lowers the multiplier itself? Should I lower the OC till I get a better cooling solution?

The Max temp should be around 62C

---------------------------------

Just noticed it... every time the core temp reaches 70c during prime blend test, the multiplier drops to x4 and stays there for a couple of seconds . Then the temp falls and the cpu fires up at 3.89 GHz again. This is probably the reason my highest temp is always 70c.

Can anyone here verify this? (that 70c is where am3 CPUs slow down on their own)

Correct it is throttling when it gets too high, you have a decent Air cooler there and the only real massive difference you will see is if you go to watercooling.

Im presuming the killer here is the ambient temperature in your climate, obviously very high id try for one of the enclosed watercoolers that are availabe and suggested above, even a h50, Coolit eco ALC. No point in getting another aircooler as you will be getting 1-2oc better at best.

It might also be worth lowering the volts if you can (ot is it only stable at those speeds with the 1.4+ v? ) I would try overclocking the CPU/NB value to around 2600-2800 if you can, this always makes a much bigger difference on AMD systems IMO than overclocking the core speeds

Doesn't the Coolit eco ALC perform worse then Silver Arrow/D14? Or would he see a bigger improvement because of his higher ambient temp?

Thats what I thought. This is the only reason I havent bought a noctua yet.

I have been using a tiny OC of 3.6GHz (400mhz increase over stock). Today when I saw that witcher2 was almost unplayable at ultra settings with ubersampling on, I couldnt take it anymore. I hope you understand my frustration. So, I started to OC everything.
My cpu is now at 3.89GHz
my xms3 1600Mhz ram is running at a little over 1700MHz.
my cpu-nb is at 2600MHz (any more and the heat builds up even faster).
my gpu is at 950mhz core and 4600Mhz (effective gddr5 value) memory.
I intend to squeeze out as much performance as I can without burning anything in my rig.
Lastly, I doubt it if the H50/70 will deliver noticeably better performance than my Thor. Gotta find out soon............... before my mind explodes with rage.
Gotta cool everything. At this point I am literally more of a fan of Mr.Freeze than of Batman.
