[RP] Windows 8 To Support Xbox 360 Games - Page 7

The reason console gaming is so popular nowdays is because consoles are cheaper than PC's. People that don't have boatloads of money will spend 150 bucks on a console, and then rent games, or borrow games, or just buy games. It takes a LOT of games to equal the price of a good computer. (maybe not now, because the consoles are so old)

I personally don't own a console because I have a good computer. I play games on the PC and let that be that. ALL of my friends, without exception, are of the same mindset. We don't bother shelling out for a console when we can play PC games, most of which are console ports anyway (unfortunately).

The major problem with console vs PC games is programming, as you all know. You code differently for different platforms, for proprietary reasons. All a console is is a computer with proprietary ****. Microsoft owns the proprietary **** for the Xbox.

The logical conclusion here, is that the markets largely don't compete. PC and console games are targeted at different audiences, for the most part. Some people have both, but most people have one or the other. So for MS to make their proprietary system available in their next OS, whether for free or a paid subscription, or otherwise, means that PC gamers can have access to Xbox exclusives without the maker of the game needing to code their whole game twice.

More games for me, more money for MS...w/e. I'm all for it.

tl;dr: - PC and consoles largely don't compete for marketshare. They are different. Games from one spilling into the other doesn't hurt profit, it helps it.

PC gaming and console gaming do share markets. Sure, not so much in the existing market but you need to look at the 10 year olds that want to truely start gaming (Rated M games too mind you). You think their parents are going to build or buy them all gaming computers? No, they get a console. If this happened...I am sure it would be a good thing for all parties involved. It would just require a kind of thinking for Microsoft that I have never seen before. Unless there is some unseen advantage for MS...

Maybe the 720 isn't going to be backward compatable with 360
Maybe MS is planning on killing all 360 support with this excuse
Maybe MS knows that 360 emu's are about to pop up all over

If they did this...it would be great, but I just can't see MS doing something so smart.

It's a lovely idea, but it would pretty much kill the 360 if it happened.

I havent read the whole thread as i'm on my phone, but this could be MS also making a move at steam? A large amount of games that have been previously been locked off to Pc gamers (which there are quite a few i wouldnt mind playing) they could offer digital downloads plus having standard pc games on windows games. Ps3 Steam (pc) v xbox windows games live (pc). It would imo take a larger chunk out of steams market share than anything else i could think of :-P

This makes sense though I'm skeptical. Xbox 360 games shouldn't have too much difficulty running on modern PC hardware if the right emulator/translation stuff is in place (maybe just an automatic update to download an x64-compiled version of the main EXEs/DLLs). The 360 has to be within a few years of its end of life anyway, this could open up the market for 360 games in the future and allow people to play "legacy" 360 games without having to own a "legacy" console.

Windows 8 will cost more than an Xbox 360.

This is either entirely non-sense or requires a physical Xbox 360 console.

Why not? MS makes more off of you purchasing Windows than it does from you purchasing an Xbox. This would help Windows keep its marketshare, and encourage more people to buy an Xbox 360 IMO. For example, I bought Portal 2 on the PS3 because that meant I'd get a PC copy for free. Now imagine if you're buying a multi-platform game in the future, and you could do the same with all Xbox 360 games....would you buy the PC version, 360 version, or PS3 version? If you buy the 360 version you get the PC version free, if you buy the PS3 version you don't get a PC version free. I think the choice is fairly clear.

it really wouldn't.

1... not all computers could handle it.
2... the 360 is on its way out. 720 for the win!

How about pirated copies? You could rent the game and rip it on your hard drive or burn it on a DVD to play it for almost free. Unless they make a way to make sure only original copies can work but even there I already see the rise of hackers everywhere. Also, wasn't the thing that killed cross-platform GFWL the fact that PC user could move and aim way faster that someone using a gamepad and made the game unfair?
