PII X4 840/MSI 785GT-E63 won't POST with Dell PERC 6/i

post #1 of 3
Thread Starter
I migrated my current storage system to a new mobo/CPU for use as a HTPC. This setup minus the DVD drive was running stable on the old mobo (Core2/P43/same memory).

New setup:

PII X4 840
MSI 785GT-E63
(2) 1GB Samsung DDR2-667 modules
(1) 160GB WD (Main) (on mobo)
(7) Samsung 2GB HDD on Perc 6/i using PCIE 16X slot
Samsung DVD-/+RW
TT 500W PSU

The new system will POST and boots into windows as normal without the Perc 6/i installed. I verified that the integrated GPU was selected and the system wasn't trying to use the Perc 6/i as it's default GPU.

I know these cards had issues with Intel chip sets so I used tape on pins 5/6 (heat sink side) to disable the SMbus. There is no SMbus option in the BIOS, so the tape fix is the only one I have tried.

I haven't found much else regarding this issue, any help would be appreciated.

@OP

Have you tried covering pins 5 & 6?
