I'd do a 60 day warranty.

I don't know how you can just give a number like that. It really depends on the hours he puts in. If by two weeks you mean 80 hours per unit (this seems unlikely) then a price of 1500 would not be unreasonable.

If, on the other hand, it takes you more on the order of 30 hours per unit, than I think that 1000 a unit is acceptable.

Edit: A 60 day warranty sounds about right.

Ill have some finished pictures posted in a few weeks once im done with the two prototypes (I keep changing the designs )

As far as hours put in god I dont even know plus with the prototypes its hard to judge what the actual time for the production units will be as there was a lot of trial and error that I wont have to deal with with the production models. I would be willing to take a small hit on profit just because I actually enjoy building them and dont have to work a counter lol

As im sure many of you have already figured out my main customer base will be solders (that was why I originally started on these was for two solders). I find that they would be the ones most in need of a portable gaming setup like this. They are built into pelican cases so that they are 100% water and dust proof when closed

If so, you could offer a cheaper service of modding uesd Xbox 360s, shorten the warranty or something and get a slightly higher profit.
Yes the cost will include the price of a new Xbox 360 Slim and The monitor that I use.

Actually one of the prototypes is an used xbox. Because of the problems and difference between them and the new slim models. Im basically refusing to do it out of an older xbox the motherboards are bigger as well as the HSF and everything else. Making it a real chore to even get one to fit into a case.

There are always used Xbox 360 slims! We've had tons of promotions for $99/$129 Xbox 360 4gb and there's a lot of cheap used ones now.

I understand that it's good to do something you like, but if you're spending more than 20 hours which I would assume since you said "two weeks" and if you're making any less than $200 profit, then sadly you'd be better off flipping burgers at McDonalds.

The full build log can be found here with ALOT more pictures. The prototypes should be done in a week or so I decided to go with metal covers instead of acrillic.

also Im thinking I agree with either 60 or 90 day warranty covering the work. Kinda sucks if components fail cuz im eating the cost of the repairs with now external warranty on them

In my opinion, even if you're putting $600 of work into this as you say, I doubt many, if any people, are going to pay just under a grand for a 360. Yes, they're getting it portable, they're getting the display and everything to come with it, but it's still a thousand dollars.

If I were you, I would look at ways to cut on cost and look at what is needed and not needed, look at what you can provide, thing about the long term, then decide if you are really able to continue this, if you are really able to cover a "warranty," and if you can even handle running a side business.

I have a suggestion. What about offering for people to send you their current 360 and have you do it up if they cannot foot a $1k price tag. That would probably get you a few more customers. Maybe make the price around $400 for that? Just tossing out ideas. XD

I have considered that which is why ive wanted to keep the cost under a grand the killer is the xbox as it costs $300 and the $90 monitor. As for people wanting them ive actually got a fair amount of people who want them. Mostly solders deploying as alot of them do not have a tv or anything in the living quarters. and this allows for movies and games.

Handling a side buisness wont be a problem im pretty free as far as time goes. Your right about the warranty tho im still unsure as to what to do regarding that. I should be able to bring costs down alittle. Now that I have an idea of what all I will need to build one.

Ok bro, gonna be straight up with you. (Entrepreneur)
Hours means nothing to me. I don't care how long it took, I care about the product I get, easy way to say it is: P4 is high clock, C2D is low clock. Make sense?

They say its cool, might not want to buy it though. Ask them how much they would pay for it. Me? Well... I'm your worst customer lol, don't ask me. Ask them what they would pay. Short version: Price discrimination.

The less they know the better for you. Do not mention: parts, labor, or anything unnecessary. Ask general questions like screen size, fan mods, or any extras they want, but you don't want to spec it. This is a game system, not a computer.

Dialog:

Kid I'd pay you 400 for that.
Sorry man, I can't do that, its more expensive than that to make.
500?
Naw dude, sorry.
Ok. peace.

Dude thats so cool! How much would you want to build that?
Uhm, how much would you pay for it?
Dude I'd pay you 800 to do that to my 360, WOW.
Well, bring it over, lets do this! If you want I can throw in... (stuff) for ($) or if you want me to make it out of a new 360 then its ($)
Ok, sweet, lemme get back to you on that.

How much to make these?
How much is it worth to you?
Well how much do you do them for?
It depends on what the person wants, I do it based on budget mostly.
Whats the typical price?
Name what you want, and I'll tell you.
(something)
Ok, for something like that I can make it cheaper for (this) or add (something) for that.
Alright, lemme think about it.

Warranty?
Days? Don't mention it unless they ask. Soldiers aren't going to come back to get it fixed. You can offer it for more money, shipping and all if something goes bad.

Do these come with a warranty?
Do you think my work is shoddy?
Well, no...
Tell you what, if you have a problem lemme know. I'll do what I can do for you. But I don't make bullship. Ask anyone I made it for.

Good luck, and I hope this is profitable for you, and your customers will be happy. If you can have any extra modular parts (batteries, cables, etc), that could fail and you could offer, that would be great as well.
