Canon 24-70mm f/2.8

I'm thinking about buying this as my first lens for my 40D. I'm currently using loaned 28mm f/1.8. The large aperture is nice, but I'm ready for something sharper with more reach, and I would like to own my own glass.

I'd personally go for the Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. Sure, it's not L or a full-frame lens, but it's a much more useful focal length on APS-C bodies like the 40D. 24 mm is just not that wide on crop.

24-70 sucks on a crop. Do not buy.

Another one for the 17-55 f/2.8. It's a much more useful focal range on a cropped sensor compared to the 24-70.

GIT A 24-70 LOL. Just kidding. Canon's 24-70 sucks. Get a 17-55.

+ a lot for the 17-55. I owned once myself with the 40D and it was a killer combo. It may not have L build quality, but it's still very well built, and a hell of a lot lighter. The 24-70 is a massive lens.

Damn.
I was gonna come in here and smash the 24-70 but now I feel like I needa defend my baby.

Sure she doesn't have internal zoom; Can get soft wide open around the edges; is an odd focal length offering on canon's 1.6 bodies.

But it is a workhorse of a lens for photojournalists, wedding photogs, portrait work, and much more.

Still everyone here is right, 16-35mm or the 17-55 2.8 would probably suit you much better and are great lenses.

24-70 + APS-C = awesome sauce to me... On my D90 if I could only have one lens it would be a 24-70.

It depends on your needs really.

I'm probably going to end up getting the 24-70mm due to the fact that it's not that much more than the 17-85mm. I'm also tossing around the idea of moving to a 5D mkii when the mkiii comes out.

I know a lot of people are saying it's a strange focal length for a crop sensor, but I am currently using a 28mm prime and it is certainly wide enough for me.
