Which GPU

Thread Starter
I think I'm getting the hang of folding. With my cpu, I'm getting 6K to 9K ppd. I have a second system that I'll be using soon -1090t.

When you fold with a gpu, will it be at 100% use like the cpu?

I ask, because I won't be able to deal with the fan going full speed, so it would be a good reason to go with watercooling. I figure after I build the loop, I won't want to change it very often.

So, what card would give me the most ppd?

I'd need to run it with wine. I looked at the data base of cards, but I don't understand the what it means.

Didn't Nvidia invent that technology? I'd lean in that direction if it were me. I don't know much more about the subject.

Yes, it will be folding at 100%. It will also use some CPU power (around 10%).

A GTX 580/590 will produce the most PPD, but the GTS 450 will produce the most points for your dollar.

No folding on GPU's originally started on AMD cards. But over the last couple of years Nvidia cards have returned more PPD.

As I use Nvidia cards i can tell you that I get approx 9K from a GTX 460 55-62oC and approx 14K from my GTX 480 60oC high 90's on the fan. Not a quiet machine. But these are running under Windows XP 64bit. I am not sure what you will get under wine using GPU'S. I dont even know if it is possible to run GPU folding under Wine but I am sure someone will be along to confirm if it will.

Good luck with your folding

The most PPD you can get from a GPU would be the 580 (Base 18k to close to 21k depending on clocks), but a 570/480 can easily pump close enough PPD to match it.

Its not hard running the GPU clients in Linux under Wine, and yes folding will use your GPU at 100% usage.
