The Megahalems is not steel. I know that on some versions the top fin is stainless steel in order to make them tougher and scratch resistant but this is only the very top fin. The rest are aluminum. I have the megashadow version and my top fin is not steel. If the mega was uncoated carbon steel like you said it would rust almost instantly... The plating is probably nickel or chrome. I'm not sure.
"Also added to the upgrade package is the new material for the top fin on this "Mega" heatsink. This particular fin is made of all stainless steel. Its main features incorporate a greater resistance to accidental scratches and oxidation. For regular maintenance, all you have to do is lightly polish it with a soft cloth so you’ll always have that new out-of-the-box shiny looks; great for showing off at LAN parties and to your friends!"
I wouldn't boil it, just give it a nice rinse. If you are having trouble getting smudges off try using some rubbing alcohol. That's what I use to get fingerprints off mine. There is no need to wash it with distilled water. Tap water is fine. If you want to avoid water spots then a quick rinse with distilled at the end is fine. But there is no need to use distilled water for the entire process. I'd just run it under the sink to clean out the fins, rinse with distilled water, let it dry, install it again, and then wipe off any fingerprints with a paper towel soaked in a little alcohol once it is installed.Edited by Epitope - 5/26/11 at 1:05am
