I have a scrap computer the motherboard is dead, it has windows XP on it would it be saved to the hard drive? If so can I just put the hard drive into my computer and use the OS?

It's on the hard drive, but the drivers that operate all the little things on the motherboard will be different, so there's no guarantee that it will work. If it works, then it may ask you to reactivate the Product Key.

It's worth a shot, but expect problems. That way if it works smoothly, then it'll be awesome.

If it's from a bought computer by HP or something like that, it won't work. If it's a retail full install it might. If not, try finding the same motherboard. Good Luck!

i have swapped a hard drive with the os (xp) into a different computer with different motherboard, it loaded the new drivers on first boot, then asked me to call microsoft, i called, and they reactivated my XP install with no questions asked. if anything, just give it a try, you may find that it works better than you would think

Best bet is if you can boot the old computer into safe mode, and uninstall ALL the drivers that are under "add and remove programs" for motherboard/audio/vid chipsets. Then shut down and remove the HDD to the new computer without rebooting the old one.

It still may just bluescreen loop.

Try to plug it into the current motherboard and see if you get connectivity. If it is a secondary drive I presume it's a few years old, make sure the pins on the back are put into the "slave" position and make sure the boot order is correct in your BIOS.
