External hdd enclosure won't work

Hi guys, I recently purchased this item from newegg, because I wanted to use my brother's laptop hdd as an external data backup device.

The hdd is a 500GB 5400rpm seagate momentus. Once I received the hdd and put it in the enclosure, it worked for about a day and half, then it would not power up anymore.

If I plug in the hdd to the computer, it would power up, so i know the issue is not hdd related. After a day or so, it would randomly power up and work again with the enclosure, but for the last few days the enclosure wouldn't work at all.

On newegg it reads that this enclosure would power up hdds with a storage size up to 750GB, even though on the manufacturer's site it says up to 500GB.

Since it is not worth RMAing the enclosure, will you please help me pick another external enclosure that would work with my hdd?

I have the same enclosure and it works great. Maybe you aren't getting enough power from your USB ports.

I am plugging in the hdd via the enclosure on 2 different laptops, with the main usb cable and also trying to plug in both usb cables. It's a no go

Here is a fantastic enclosure that I really like:

2.5" SATA II Enclosure w/ ESATA & USB 2.0 Support

It's cheap, with a $3 e-SATA cord you can have a fast external for less than $20.

Mine works perfectly.

From what I' seeing, it doesn't come with the external power supply; what hdd are using with it? Will the esata cable power it up or will I need to plug in the usb cables to power it up?

I am using it with a 500GB Momentus as well.

The power cable from the USB is the power, you don't need an external power supply. It's nice too, they properly label the 'data' and 'power' on the USB plugs.

For e-SATA, you plug it in and use the 'power' side of the y-cable from the USB plugs. Works perfectly.

Thank you for your input so far, I think I'll go with this though, it has esata with an esata cable included, and from the reviews many people have successfully used it with 500GB drives

NP!

I looked at that one as well, but I'm a cheap fool.
